Nicely said, you can have your say about 4-3-3 in here:At the heart of the negativity is an inductive logical argument: TFC aren’t very good. They operate in a 4-3-3. Ergo, the 4-3-3 isn’t very good.
Well, there’s a team west of BMO Field that’s similarly stuck in a ditch. It’s Vancouver, and they’ve been chained to a 4-4-2 most of the year. Should we similarly conclude that a 4-4-2 doesn’t work in MLS? Same question for San Jose, who run a 4-4-2 through and through and are struggling mightily right now, having just lost another one at home.

at 647am, the account manager is down, and with the first CCL game in 3 weeks, I suspect ticket pricing and invoices will be up later today.

Watched this game. Portland dominated. Timbers Army was loud throughout. At one point, the announcers discussed supporters and the loud chants, whether they hurt a young team, pushing them at times when they should be more patient. Twellman disagreed, saying that the supporters energy goes right to the legs of their own team (and may bump up the opposition too). He went on to say that energy is never a bad thing.
I think it says a bit more about Toronto's comeback in a hostile stadium- where Toronto dominated the 2nd half.
LA was shocking in the first half - zero shots. Talk about a change in fortunes - JPA looks lost. I think he gets released at the end of this season and leaves the league. Also, LD often looks uncomfortable when he plays too far up front. LA came out bright in the 2nd half w LD in mid but I think were waiting for Portland to fold. I don't think this one game makes LA crap but they were definitely not in good form. Ended their 14 game unbeaten streak.
The announcers before the second leg said that neither Santos or Avila would be cup tied for the tournament. I thought that meant they could play. The announcers could be wrong at any rate.
Santos was still a member of TFC, but he didn't play and wasn't in the lineup for the 1st leg of the qualifier, so he should be eligible to play for Dallas...
Winter should have used him as a sub :PLineups:
Toronto FC -- Milos Kocic, Andy Iro, Doneil Henry, Ashtone Morgan, Ryan Johnson (Javier Martina 78'), Danny Koevermans, Matthew Stinson (Julian de Guzman 73'), Nick Soolsma, Torsten Frings, Richard Eckersley, Gialuca Zavarise (Joao Plata 49')
Substitutes Not Used: Stefan Frei, Ty Harden, Danleigh Borman, Eddy Viator
And I remember a few people in the offseason saying how awesome JPA is and how it'd be great to have him at TFC.
Others were cautioning the JPA fans that JPA is old, hadn't scored after a certain point last year in NY's season and should be avoided.
Looks like NYRB was correct in letting him go.
sounds like he can then.
from the sun article.
I just wrote a blog piece about this yesterday, mainly focussing on the crowd, and how a small, tight stadium ful of boisterous home fans can give a good advantage and that if toronto can't prove it can do that in these three games they shouldn't get any of the canada games in the next round, but also touching on the pitch issue. With Esteli head coach Otoniel Olivas stating that the Nicaraguans were looking forward to playing on a hazardous pitch that appeared worse than most Toronto house league grounds, one has to wonder if small clubs should be allowed to purposely muck up a pitch before playing more technical Major League Soccer clubs.
As far as the pitch is concerned, TFC fans and players can be as critical as they want, but without making it a deathtrap, Esteli and other teams should be doing what they can to help themselves win. If that means ridiculously long grass, or a muddy and bouncy pitch that makes it difficult for the (theoretically) more talented team to play their natural game, then so be it. There's too much emphasis these days on having perfectly manicured pitches that allow the best players to play their best game, but a game like Tuesday night's really takes the game back to a less sterile and frankly more interesting time. A crappy pitch and a quirky stadium can be a great equaliser, (as an example look at how TFC's home record has worsened since the plastic pitch was ripped up, coincidence?) and pretty football be damned, any home team should be doing whatever it can to get a result. Also, all those things, and yes I'm going to include comically bad refereeing in this, make the game more interesting (even if you're the inconvenienced away team, a win that includes overcoming adversity has got to be more satisfying no?) so to Real Esteli and all the other small teams with imperfect stadiums, I salute you.
He's eligible, but the CONCACAF site implies that players can only be added to the roster at the Championship stage (i.e. quarter-finals). So he's not tied to TFC and can play for Dallas, but it won't be for the game against us (if I'm reading their rules correctly).
MLS is a tough, physical league, that emphasizes speed, and features plastic fields, grueling travel, extreme weather, and incompetent refs. - NK Toronto
i can't agree with that at all - biased refs and shitty pitches done purposely to the advantage of the home team just to equalize the match? no thanks - i guess in hockey terms it would be ok to take a pick axe to the ice surface when a fast skating, quick passing team came to town?
boisterous supportive crowds - absolutely but play the game with quasi fair refs and an 'approved' pitch based on some kind of standard i think.

Can't agree with this. Small and imprefect is fine, but the pitch in Esteli seemed horrendous, it seriously effected the play of the game. There is no romance in that.Esteli and other teams should be doing what they can to help themselves win. If that means ridiculously long grass, or a muddy and bouncy pitch that makes it difficult for the (theoretically) more talented team to play their natural game, then so be it.
I double-checked.
Actually, under article 5, he can be added if Dallas didn't post a full roster to start with, so here's hoping.

I thought the grass was bad...
"Aside from the red laser pointer... Nicaraguan audience was surprisingly tame in terms of flying objects"
WTF
I've seen morons with laser pointers at BMO, one guy got booted 2 years ago.
They were tame, and I don't think its surprising. We are talking about Esteli, Nicaragua here, not exactly a hotbed of football passion. Just because they are central American and latino doesn't mean they will be throwning bags of piss and rocks.

A wee piece on Torsten Frings.

Kinda off-topic but there's a USA-CAN rugby match Saturday at BMO.
