Default TFC @ Portland Pre-Match/Match Thread

The Timbers have been struggling, but the atmosphere in Portland will make Nicaragua seem like a playground. Considering that TFC has to earn a result in a far more important match in the CCL on Tuesday on two days rest, I think Winter should rotate the roster accordingly, and rest as many of our key players as possible. If Frei is not completely recovered, hopefully Kocic can regain his confidence.

    ------------------Frei-------------------

    Eckersley--Robinson--Iro--Yourassowsky

    ------DeGuzman--------Sturgis----------

    ----------------Dunfield-----------------

    Martina----------------------------Plata

    ----------------Santos-----------------

    Subs: Frings, Koevermans, Johnson

    TFC 1 Timbers 1

I think this game will put us back into reality. 2-0 Portland. That Real Esteli was absolutely awful. Also, Winter puts in a "mixed" lineup again.

You're probably right, although I'm not sure that would be a wise decision. I'd rather see them play 20-30 minutes than 60-70 minutes with the short rest in between upcoming matches. These guys were inactive for quite a while and they have played the full 90 minutes in their first three games, all in the span of a week.

Would be nice to get a win in Portland, but I think Winter should not play anyone more the a half, change it up regarless of the score and rest everyone for next weeks Concacaf match.
We need to advance to have another real meaningful game at BMO this year.

It's about a 7.5 hour flight from Portland to Nicaragua, not to mention the time zones. Managing the roster is key

I have a feeling Yourassowsky and Santos will not wear TFC red anytime soon,if ever again.

Yourassowsky is not on the Roster anymore,it might be a typo,Santos let's say just a feeling.

I don't know the roster limit rules. However, Elbekay Bouchiba, Adrian Cann, Nicholas Lindsay, and Dicoy Williams are all still included on the roster. Any or all of them may be defined as season-ending injuries (meaning their roster spot is available, even though their cap hit remains).

Ah ha ha ha, TFC doesn't even try to list their alumni. They would have to hire an extra full-time web guy just to keep up with that.

Not sure if JDG plays on that fake grass crap over in Portland. Especially on a short turn around.

TFC crushes Portland, first year expansion club. Should be easy for a team in its fifth year in the league, earning bundles of money for the owners, supported by thousands of rabid fans. Shit, next easy game should be against that other expansion team, Philly. Wait, just woke up. Reality bites. Portland wins 4-0. Better team wins again.

Doesn't Portland have a stronghold at home?

They'll want revenge on their 1st loss to us, just like we did with Vancouver.

I have a negative feeling about this game, much like I did with NYRB. The odds just aren't with us on this one, considering that Frings and Koevermans NEED a rest at this point.

    ------Deguzman--------Frings(Naturlich)--

    ----------------Johnson------------------

    ----Soolsma-----------------------Plata--

    ---------------Koevermans---------------

Frings and Koevermans should be subbed 60-75.

Any idea when Griffit will return?

I love that line up and week after week people pick the strongest line up (In their opinion) yet Winter is very predictable in that he always puts in some unexpected players, that said you may see Stinson, or Harden, or Viator in the line-up. I almost sense that Winter is going to blood the academy graduates to mold the team for next year.

You do know we'll only be able to make 3 substitutions?

More please, Stryker. I agree but you didn't say why.

I don't think that he isn't able to play a full 90 but that he's a better sub for us at this point. Him starting previously was more a necessity of "who's left standing" on our squad.

Not saying I'm unimpressed with him just that a sub role is ideal for him for this team right now.

Same reasons you mention. He's a far better player as a sub. He energizes the rest of the team and can run an already tired opposition ragged.

I prefer Soolsma over Plata for the full 90. Plata has had flashes of brilliance in a few games but seems to absolutely disappear in road games.

Plata’s energy does make him an ideal super sub on a properly built team. The issue is we still have the construction sign up and he’s someone we need to start.

As for Soolsma, the more I watch him the less I like. His cuts and ability to shake the defender once he has the ball stand out, but overall impact of his play is poor IMO. Too slow, guilty of over-playing at times when a simple pass would have been a superior option, and an inopportune finisher.

Why the fuck would I want us to sign good players if we're afraid to play them, think about it.
