    Default Columbus Crew Cuts

Columbus fans are getting their own barbershop. All right then. How long until this image is photoshopped to look like Hitler?

Fans of the Columbus Crew have a lot of things to call their own: The nation's first soccer specific stadium, the nation's first pub owned by a supporters group, the city's first big league professional championship. And now: A Crew-themed barbershop.

Crew-Cuts Barbershop, opening July 25 at 2230 Summit St., is the brainchild of Crew fan and Hudson Street Hooligan Justin Leach. Leach, a graduate of the Ohio State College of Barber Styling and ardent Crew supporter, has a vision for an old school barbershop with a dash of futbol flair thrown in...

I'm surprised MLSE wasn't ahead of the Crew on this.

Who wouldn't get their hair cut at the local Real Sports Barber Shop?

Spelling isn't a strong point in Ohio.

How so? Columbus is singular, and the extra syllable is pronounced. I'm pretty sure they got it correct here.

Actually the extra 's' is sometimes used with names, but I don't think it's used for names of places.

Normally when a word ends with an 's' and you make it possessive, the second 's' isn't added (sometimes with names though as I've stated above).

    I'll be THAT guy.

It should be kept with 2 S's. Just remove the apostrophe for maximum inappropriateness.

I think the whole thing is inappropriate enough.

I've been an editor for 23 years, and technically Columbus's is correct. It's a possessive. It's not used in most grammatical style anymore simply because it looks awful.

The only time this wouldn't be correct is when the existing 's' on the end of the word is to pluralize it. So when my colleague Mindy Jacobs is referred to possessively, it's technically Jacobs's (which is the style the Edmonton Sun uses) but most people would write Jacobs' (which is the Toronto Sun's style).

Guess we'll have to go upstairs for our answer.

and wikipedia is back with the answer.

    Possessives in geographic names

Place names in the United States generally do not use the possessive apostrophe on federal maps and signs

    So Columbus is wrong.
