Default Fortgate - NE Revolution Supporters vs FO

Hey everyone - I figured I'd post this here as some might find it interesting as we deal with our own struggles with FO and security (who are also Team Ops if I'm not mistaken - same as New England). This is from a buddy who's a member of one of the Rev supporters groups, who has always come up for Toronto/New England every year and we always go down to visit for the reverse fixture. I'm not going to say its "good" that we're not the only one dealing with crap, but it's interesting to see the parallels. Also I hear 'YSA' (or 'YSD') pretty much every week at BMO and have yet to see any repercussions.

The problem is someone at NE front office has started to cave to the league...the league in short hates swearing. They tried explaining it to us at last years supporters summit and hoping to push people away from it....fuck garber.

I'm just glad I've never heard any curse words coming out of 110-113. How would those poor goalies / corner kick takers handle it after all?

Unfortunately I can't help thinking if they start succesfully cracking down at some stadiums it won't be long before we have the league breathing down our necks at BMO.

Not sure if this is the Front office hiding behind TeamOps or if TeamOps is just trowing it's weight around. Sounds like the first one.

The league can be pretty fucking sneaky about things like this. It's Corporate America/Big Brother at it's best. If they can't do things out in the open, they try and do it another way while letting someone else take the fall.

Anyways I'm ranting here. I think this SG needs to make a stand. grow some balls and start making moves to protect what they have - not bend over and do what the FO tells them to do. They've already shown weakness by saying they will stop the swearing by years end.

We've made a point of not swearing where I sit because there are families around. As for the supporters sections, the league is just stupid to try and come down on this. Fix the crap refereeing first!

Complete nonsense....I've NEVER heard of a supporters group being BANNED because of profanity...except for racist chants....Imagine if they tried this nonsense in Europe or South America???? Unfortunately I just think it's a matter of time before they come after our SGs for the same reason...

well, if MLSE and MLS want to strike the killer blow to matchday enjoyment at BMO Field, this could be it.
What a joke. I feel for our friends at the Revs- great fans and they deserve to be treated much better than this.

personally I have always thought the YSA chant is silly, but thats just my opinion. Aside from that, I feel bad for the Revs SG. This is just another reason this league is M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E. Stay stong Rev supporters.
They should stand outside the teams head office and chant "You suck assholes!"

I honestly believe supporters across the league need to stand up to their individual teams and their owners. The league can't ignore THOUSANDS of ticketholders, let alone their most visible ticketholders and most loyal fans, telling them to back off once and for all.

Without a united front, each individual supporters group in each city will be left to fight it's own team and security personnel on their own. It's a battle of attrition that is not the most efficient way of dealing with this issue.

If ever there was a point where the United Supporters of the league needed to get their shit together and get some action done, this is it. This is a direct attack on the very fans that pay money and come to games. I have seen swearing and vulgar language at every single sporting event I have ever been to and never once an arrest. Vancouver goes up in flames and they have had barely more arrests so far than the number of fans arrested at this Revs game. This is a ridiculous state of affairs.

Swearing...geez. Dear lord this league has it's head up it's ass.

No matter how bad things get with TFC I just have to remind myself how much worse NER have it. No stadium, no atmosphere, no coverage, no hope and terrible team. I feel badly for the supporters, I really do, especially considering they are sitting on an untapped goldmine in Boston (proper).

I wonder if anyone swears at Patriots games? Would this be different if they had a stadium in Boston?

From the article this really sums it up:

This team is at a crossroads, will you go for the 18-35 demographic that has driven the passion of the teams who are now in "MLS 2.0" and even stepping into "MLS 3.0" or will you continue on with the youth soccer crowd and continue to be left in the dust. The ball is on the penalty spot put it in the back of the net or botch it Revs, it's up to you how you carry forward from here.

A chant/song should be created. Something quick and easy, loaded with fuck's and basically saying "we can say what we want"

Then all SG's league wide should sing it during a week's play.

Let the league know who pays their fuckin bills.

I'm not even sure that the YSA ban is related to the "kids" in the stadium.

Watching an American MLS game on TV, often the only audible chant is the YSA on goalkicks. I'd wager this league stance has more to do with not offending advertisers than it does those in attendance.

i think this is exactly what Garber said when he didn't want the "swearing"

if your one random guy yelling F U at the ref, well that won't be heard on tv, but a continual chorus, not only does that potentially affect advertising, but it also might have issues with broadcast corporations and the ppl that police them and stuff (don't think espn wants any of that on live tv etc...)

There should be an expectation that if you go to a sporting event, especially where there is alcohol served that there will be foul language, it is a part of every sport in every pro league all around the world, to think that you can avoid because it's a soccer game is ludicrous.
Even without the 'alcohol served' bit, this is an important point.

Any situation where anyone is passionate about anything, passionate language will be used. DUH.

If they (Garber, the FOs, et al) believe they can fill stadia with only Soccer Moms and Ned Flanders types, they've really got their heads up their asses.
    The league will die.

The way SGs are specifically targeted by mics to manufacture crowd noise for TV means that swearing by individuals can actually be heard clearly.

^ 100% agree (with you agreeing with me )

I don't think we have to worry at TFC. If the Americans hear "Douche-bag" they think it is something french.

Which makes you wonder in the day and age of fake audio tracks such as the Masters' Golf Tournament broadcasts requiring a set number of piped in "bird chirps" over set time frame, why they simply cannot turn down the in-stadium audio and replace it with a simple crowd noise loop?

I guess selectively arresting your season ticket holders is an easier solution. Broadcasts look so much better when they are in front of an empty, swear-free mind you but empty stadium.

The swearing thing isn't any easy argument. You can't shelter your kids if you choose to take them. My son knows the words to TFC chants but we don't use them around the house and definitely not infront of grandma or with his teachers or coaches. Time and place.

At the same time, if folks are in a family section then a little courtesy goes a long way.

In the end though, I don't think this has to do with swearing in a general sense. I think it has more to do with an organized chant that is clearly audible on network TV which is likely why they targeted that one (and the SG) specifically.
