Borrowing a meme from the excellent Raptors RealGM board.
I'll remember a few things about Andrea:
i) How exciting it was when he was signed that there was finally a Canadian team giving young Canadian kids a chance. I remember being upset that Dichio was signed because it meant that Lombardo wouldn't start.
ii) The LAG game when he was still a player with 'potential', and he played quite well, and almost, almost, scored a goal, but it was cleared off the line at the last moment (I believe the game ended up 0-0). I've always wondered what would have happened to his career had that goal gone in. He likely won't have a chance that good again in the MLS.
iii) My wondering was lessened during the midst of the horrible, horrible goalless streak when Lombardo and Samuel were completely inept up front after the all-star break. Lombardo's nadir was when the team was down in Dallas, Lombardo got sent in all alone and horribly flubbed a wrong-footed half-volley onto the interstate with no one pressuring him. He was subbed off immediately after despite the fact that there were no real strikers on the bench. That was certainly the beginning of the end for Andrea.
iv) Like David Guzman before him, Andrea was never afraid to exploit his tenous professional status to the hilt, whether out on the town, or on his countless appearances at Foot Lockers and Adidas outlet stores up and down the 401.
Farewell, Andrea, I can't say I'll miss you, and you were kind of an asshole on the field, taking out your frustration on the referees, linesmen and others, but, well, it was real.
