"In order to build for the future, TFC must do what it has failed to do since its inception: eradicate those pressing issues in the center of the field. A top-class central defender must rank first on the list for obvious reasons, but a deep-lying distributor – envision the player TFC thought it signed when de Guzman penned his Designated Player deal instead of the shell-like version it has received to date – to link play and a prolific striker should follow closely behind on the list of priorities."

Granted, DeRo is now playing for a far more talented MLS Club.

However, if DeRo hadn't felt the necessity to move on to another organization and remained with Toronto, I think TFC would be in a far more respectable position in the standings, and he would likely have much better offensive statistics as well.

I have watched several New York matches this season on GolTV. DeRo has played well in a conventional AM role, but since he has been uitilized primarily as a playmaker, he has not been able to generate nearly as many scoring opportunities for himself, and he is currently on pace for his worst season statistically in MLS.

I can't say I condone or fault his decision to leave Toronto, but if DeRo was looking to gain leverage this season towards a lucrative contract next season (either in Toronto or elsewhere), I think he would have likely made a stronger case for himself by staying with TFC as the focal point of the offense and putting up similar numbers to the last 2 seasons.

I know. It's one thing for us to be talking about it, or local media. But someone totally outside looking in seeing that the guy we're paying to be our BEST is amongst our worst players is just... unpleasant. It's a cold slap of reality. If the guy making almost as much as the rest of the team, the guy supposed to help lead the team, is THAT obviously bad and actually apparently getting worse instead of better then what's that say about our future until he comes off the books... ugh.

Regardless of his contract status, if Attakora doesn't start alongside Williams next match, it will be indefensible on Winter's part.

Looking ahead, I hope Cann's injury is not serious, because with Williams playing for Jamaica in the Gold Cup, our backline is going to be paper thin at CB.

just discovered this from a few days ago at les Rosbifs, a site covering englishmen playing abroad.

interview with Andy Welsh, focussing mainly on his time with TFC

apparently his only regret is leaving so soon to go to Blackpool.

This quote I found real interesting. And a very good point

"The MLS is a much harder league to break into than people give it credit. You can’t just go over there and get in at a club. You have to earn a trial but it’s not even easy to do that. They have salary caps and you’re owned by the league, not the club.
Part of the reason I left was the fact that at the back of my mind was the fact that you can be traded at any point without any say in it and that doesn’t bring stability for your family life; one day you’re at Toronto and the next you’re at Salt Lake City.
I think with the league structured the way it is, it’ll struggle to become a top international league. The conference structure and the league owning the players will keep it at a level where people may question the standard. The big name players help the profile but"

You know where I stand with this. My whole defense of DeRo was not because he was a friend or I liked this cornrows, it has been because I believe we were a better team with him as opposed to without him. If at this point people still don't want to believe it, it's in the hands of history. We as fans are suffering through this painful football because management decided they did not want to pay him, pure and simple. But to a degree, we deserve what we are getting now because we (as a general fanbase) decided to side with management as opposed to the player who could have minimized this painful spell.

I have watched several New York matches this season on GolTV. DeRo has played well in a conventional AM role, but since he has been uitilized primarily as a playmaker, he has not been able to generate nearly as many scoring opportunities for himself, and he is currently on pace for his worst season statistically in MLS.
This is true, but this is also the role that people on this board were saying DeRo was not able or willing to play. His selfless playing in NY has proven that to be complete rubbish. I had a chance to speak to one of the coaches in NY last weekend and they told me that they are extremely happy with DeRo's play to this point and are very upset they will lose him during the Gold Cup.

2 seasons (on top of what is already a brilliant MLS career) was more than enough for him to have a strong case. A 3rd season wasn't going to make his case any stronger. The saddest part being that it was not going to cost us a DP slot at all unlike what most people still believe.

Either way, he is gone now and his current stay in NY is going very well. I visited NYRB Arena and saw the facilities and spoke to some in the front office and I will tell you this: I have no idea what the Metrostars organization was like or if it was the exact same personnel, but this NYRB organization is very professional and in many aspects puts TFC to shame. They do things for the players that TFC refused to do here in order to make them comfortable. I have heard similar things about other organizations. It's these things that have turned me against our FO because there is no reason why our FO could not have the same level of professionalism. They choose not to and I for one will continue to drive this point home.

Yeah, this club needs a shake-up top-down. Unfortunately, the shake-up didn't go top enough, they needed to change the MLSE portion of the club, they are utterly useless.

I'm beginning to think that the only way this club will ever success is when we have new ownership that is more football-centric.

One thing that has baffled me about the "rebuilding", and I hate this term because in MLS, rebuilding is a cop-out, is that you build from the spine out. We have no spine. No CBs, poor central MFs, and a questionable centre-forward. This is football 101 .... at least to me it is!

yep, it's scary how our defence fell apart without Cann. and though it's good that gordon will be back and he has played well, it's depressing that he's the great hope to make our forward line better.

both cann and gordon are mls journeyman level players. there's defeinitely a place for them, but it's a sad indictment of our squad that those two are so important to the first team.
