Kick Off: Teibert fuels rivalry, Nkufo's future

Teibert was once a member of the Toronto FC academy and left them to join Vancouver. Now he says: "I've been at TFC and Vancouver is definitely the best place to be in Canada … In all aspects.” Vancouver’s March 19 season opener against Toronto just got a lot more intense.

He was in TFC's academy back in 2008. Back then our academy was barely off the ground. Him comparing his time with TFC academy to his time with Vancouver is apples and oranges. Our academy program is quickly becoming one of the best in North America and Toronto FC is also starting to put the pieces together to try and make this club into a force from the academy all the way up to the first team management.

In that respect, Vancouver had a head start since they existed long before TFC and it is unfair to compare academies as Alixir rightly pointed out.

The true test will be in the long-term. TFC management has screwed the pooch for 5 years and wasted time in which it could have been making strides in all areas of the organization. Now that there has been a change in management, I am hoping we regain our footing and get back on track.

although the academy was already producing decent talent as of 2010, as we saw in Lindsay and Morgan and Stinson.

p.s. fuck the shitecaps.. i can't wait to see them struggle in MLS and all their "best practices" fail once they're not the big fish in the little pond.

I believe they are still here and are training with the academy.

Winter wanted to focus more on players that are closer to the first team in Orlando.

It wouldn't risk his job so why wouldn't he direct players to his agent?

I am involved in sports management and I know for a fact that development level coaches "steering" players into agents is the norm, not the exception. Believe me, it's not jumping to conclusions.

well, i hope it's a high calibre proven player, cuz the guys available right now would be out of contract for a reason (not playing well)

Hey, anyone "involved in sports management" will be interested in the divorce between Graham Smith's First Wave and McCabe/MacLean. Jimmy now beams from the home page of Santio.

Some of the same players on the Santio website are on the First Wave website. And notice how similar they are. Maybe they're in the middle of or have recently split...but it doesn't change the fundamental point that coaches have an influence where young players sign. And being that people around here are leery of Maclean, whether it's called Santio or First Wave, chances are a significant number of Academy players will eventually find themselves on Macleans roster of clients.

It's kind of the same thing in hockey but the competition between agencies is a lot more fierce.

How many options are there for a Canadian kid, especially a high end kid? Do any agents in Europe have bird-dogs in North America?

I don't think the Europeans agencies have much interest in North America so it basically leaves the American agencies. However, being that Maclean is based in Southern Ontario, it gives him a distinct advantage with TFC academy players.

I'm not going to argue this but am going to offer my view.

No one can argue Jimmy's heart and commitment to TFC in all his time here. He would be the first to fight for badge. It would be wrong to steer people to the belief that Jimmy would do anything to intentionally hinder TFC's progress.

The job of any youth coach at a professional club is to develop players to the point where they are capable of becoming professionals. Realistically most players get agents at that time. If a future player trusts a former coach and former professional player to seek out their advice on the matter that is their own decision. I am quite certain in saying that Jimmy wouldn't be holding information centre's disguised as practice to rave about First Wave.

Any anger towards First Wave is in my opinion unwarranted. It should be directed at the person who continually went to them for players that weren't up to par. First Wave only did what any unemployed athlete would want their agents to do, get them a job.

They found a sucker and took advantage for the benefit of their clients.

He was barely there last year. Preki did not want him on the sidelines.

He was a gutsy player, but I'd go easy there. Nothing is that black or white.

Brennan became a paid spokesperson for Fieldturf, just as the negative reaction to the turf was really ramping up in 2007. He was the captain. Was he really representing "TFC" there?

    Thank you.

I don't understand why people equate playing on the pitch with conduct off the pitch.

As for development level coaches...they all do the same thing, which is what Stouffville alluded to...but that is not to say once their job is done they don't try to "steer" players going pro.

Anyone else notice that if Canada wins tomorrow it will be guaranteed at least 2nd place in CONCACAF and that would be the best showing for Canada at the U-17 level ever (in Men's footy at least).

Men's U-20 tourney starts next month too.
