I believe teams have til Monday at 2:00 pm to protect players so I don't expect to hear anything before Monday morning at the earliest. I wouldn't be surprised with 1:55 Monday either.

The way we've been playing, we need all the expansion picks we can!

P-Nutz, this is about the expansion draft, not the MLS Draft. I hope we don't have any picks or that says a lot for what the league thinks of us.

TFC don't pick. Only Vancouver and Portland do. Portland picks 1st; Vancouver has 2nd pick. They continue to alternate picks.

    Protected lists are always weird.

I fully expect to see the likes of Fuad Ibrahim and Amadou Sanyang placed ahead of players like Dan Gargan.

I know what you're saying with some valueable players being left unprotected, but I think these typically come with a large salary as a deterent for other teams to pick these players up (Carl Robinson for example - I like the guy but at $300k he'd likely have been safe if we'd made him available last year). If we leave a $40k utility player / fan favorite like Dan Gargan out there I'm going to be so pissed off with this team.

    Here are my thoughts:

    Protected by HG status:

    Doneil Henry
    Nicholas Lindsay

    Protected (at least 3 I)

    Julian de Guzman
    Dwayne De Rosario
    Chad Barrett
    Adrian Cann
    Amadou Sanyang (I)
    Maicon Santos (I)
    Nana Attakora
    Stefan Frei (I)
    Jon Conway
    Jacob Peterson
    Nick LaBrocca

    Unprotected

    Nick Garcia
    Joseph Nane
    Gabe Gala
    Miloš Kočić
    Mista
    Martin Šarić
    Emmanuel Gómez
    Raivis Hščanovičs
    Maxim Usanov
    Fuad Ibrahim
    Dan Gargan
    O'Brian White
    Ty Harden

    Reasoning

JDG has a no trade clause and must be protected.

DeRo is still viewed by management as the star of this team, and unless they intend to blow it all up, you have to protect your captain.

Barrett is a west-coaster and would likely get snapped up. He's also not someone I'd want to give up for nothing.

Cann, Frei, and Nana all might be going to Europe (not sure on Frei's contract status for next year), but all three must be protected in the off chance that they don't go since they are all MLS level starters.

Sanyang, Santos are really are only two other options for I spots, Sanyang due to his potential, and Santos due to his production. It's possible Santos' loan is up and he's going back to Brazil, at which point you swap him out for Usanov or Hscanovic.

The last three spots are toss ups, but you need to keep Conway in case Frei leaves for Europe, so he takes one spot. Labrocca is a solid mid-level starter/quality bench player on a good contract, so you keep him. I believe that next year we can see the Jacob Peterson that showed up at the end of this year, especially with an off-season of actually being able to train, so you keep him.

As for the unportected list, I wasn't sure about Ibrahim, since I think he has potential, and still has value. The only other two I debated on were Harden and Gargan, but I feel they are somewhat dime a dozen players in the MLS, and could be replaced by someone else should they get picked. Everyone else seemed a no brainer, except for maybe Gomez, but he's a question mark after his injury, so I doubt anyone would pick him up.

I thought Cann was a local boy. I know he played in Vancouver for a couple of years, but I thought he was from Toronto?

WTF.....you smoking keeping Peterson over Gargan? Unless we are guranteed to get one of the centre/right backs from Akron in the draft I would not want to lose Gargan.

If Dan Gargan is our starting RB next year, we're in deep trouble. At best he's a great bench guy since he comes in at a great salary and can play multiple positions. That said, with a 30 player roster size next year, and 7 subs allowed on the bench, I have less concerns about needing someone who can play 5 positions on the bench. Henry, Garcia, or hell even Ashtone Morgan could contribute as a full back just as well as Gargan did.

You swap out Peterson, Conway, and Sanyang for OBW, Gargan and Hscanovic.

I can see the Conway argument, and would probably agree with that swap if we know Frei will be back. If Frei's already said he's testing out Europe, then you HAVE to protect a second keeper, unless you think Conway and Kocic are basically the same, then you leave them both open, and when one gets selected, you protect the other.

We're already short on wingers, and you want to give up our only real winger. I know that there's differing opinions on Peterson, so I'll just leave it at that.

As for Sanyang, the kids 19 and shows the skill and cojones to be an absolute beast in the middle in 2-3 years. You don't give up on that this early.

That said, Gargan and Hscanovic (and possibly Harden, Usanov and Ibrahim) were the only bunch on the unprotected list that I had trouble listing. That said, there were rumblings Gargan was looking for 100k a year, and the rest are bench players right now, with some promise shown (but still aren't THAT young by any means).

Swapping a few in and out makes the list about the same. If you want to keep one of Gargan or Hscanovic, I'd drop Labrocca before I drop Peterson.

For the players whose contracts end in 2010, like Attakora and Cann, if they don't resign with TFC can they wait till January and sign with another MLS team?

Before the last CBA, an MLS team held a players rights for 3 years after their final contract with that team. After the CBA, this still holds true I believe EXCEPT when a player is not offered a "suitable" contract (or one at all?) and they have a certain number of years of service, then they go through this thing called a re-entry draft, which is basically exactly like the waiver draft.

I don't think we've really seen one yet, so I'm not entirely certain how it works.

So, they can't just sign with any MLS team, and I think that if TFC offers them a contract greater than their last one, they won't go through the re-entry draft.

It's always a tough call. Personally, the Dan Gargans and Ty Hardens of the league are also tough to give up because they give you a solid bench for low $$. Stoopid expansion draft...

^ No. See first post. If a DP has a no trade clause he has to be protected in the draft...

Would have been even better if the protected lists actually followed the rules. TFC's protected list had at most 2 internationals, and it might even only be 1 (Santos) since I have no clue what Kocic is.

You take Barrett and trade him to Portland, he's a hometown boy. You want to keep him because he has value. We could probably get a high draft pick (becoming less important i know) or allocation money for him. Alternatively we might be able to pick up one of the Timbers' Canucks. They used a number this year. Not sure if they'll be kept on, but you need to be willing to do some horsetrading.

    • If a Club protects a player, it is not obligated to exercise the player’s option. It may renegotiate a new budget number for the player as in previous years.

    • If a player retires, he will not be a part of the Senior Roster, but his Club will lose its right of first refusal to him should he ultimately decide to play.

    • Players on a Club’s Developmental Roster, other than Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2010 MLS Season or Home Grown Players on a Club’s developmental roster, will be part of the expansion draft.

    • Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2010 MLS Season and Home Grown Players on a Club’s developmental roster at the end of the 2010 MLS Season are automatically protected (Clubs do not have to use a protected slot on them).

    • If Vancouver/Portland select a Developmental Player, it must offer him a Senior Roster position and he must be on the Senior Roster as of Roster Compliance Date.

    • Clubs are restricted in the number of international player(s) that they may make available. Clubs may make available a number of international players equal to their total number of international players minus three, provided that if a Club has three or fewer international players it may make available not more than one.

    • For purposes of this expansion process,
For US-based Clubs --- any non-domestic US player (players that do not hold U.S. Citizenship or Residency) will count as an International

For Toronto FC --- any non-domestic US player or non-domestic Canadian players (players that do not hold Canadian OR U.S. Citizenship or Residency) will count as an International.

    • Designated players are NOT automatically protected (i.e., Clubs must choose whether to protect such players and if such player is not protected, he will be available for selection in the Expansion Draft). However, if the Designated Player has a no-trade clause in his contract, then his MLS club must protect him and he will count as one of the 11 players who may be protected.

Maximum Player Loss: Once two (2) players have been claimed from a Club’s non-protected roster, that Club is eliminated from the expansion draft and may not lose any further players. In addition, once a player has been claimed from a Club’s non-protected roster, that Club may move a player from its non-protected roster to its protected roster.

Right to Negotiate: Vancouver and Portland will have the right to renegotiate a drafted player’s salary (either up or down) without having to place such player on waivers or giving his previous Club a right of first refusal.

Priority: On the first day of the Discovery/Allocation Period, each of Vancouver and Portland will have priority over players on its USL roster and one additional player in the USL not on its roster, subject to another MLS Club’s right of first refusal.

    • Portland Timbers will select first, Vancouver Whitecaps FC will pick second, and the two will alternate picks thereafter.

Rounds: The expansion draft will be 10 rounds.

    • After each player is selected, his team will be allowed to remove one exposed player from their list. (still looking into this rule, it's not in the official rule guide posted on MLS, but has been in sources elsewhere).

    TFC's current roster consists of:

onstad just got passed up by the dynamo on the protect list. as a vancouver native, i'm putting my money down on van city picking him up despite his age. that's one outt've 22. also, portland picked up a defender from NYRB for a draft pick.
