Seeing he's an American, wouldn't some of the other American based clubs go after him as well?

I would assume that they have a discovery claim on him or are entitled to negotiate with him via some other one of the random MLS rules that I don't fully understand

Of course, but under MLS rules, the 'Caps have the first crack.
The Whitecaps have priority among MLS clubs in signing the defender.
A defensive DP? They should read our board before going after anyone but a striker!

No chance he'd sign with MLS let alone Vancouver..... Unless he's insane.

Yeah, but if they actually sign more than one DP?

Where does it say he'd be a DP??? A guy who can't crack a 2nd tier British team isn't worth DP money...

he's probably just as good as Chad Marshall. or he could turn out to be a Danny Cailiff...

I go about the world, hand outstretched, and in the stadiums I plead: ‘A pretty move, for the love of God.’

Here's some links where it mentions he could be Vancouver's 1st DP:

Vancouver is taking advice from Mo? What an awful signing for a DP.

hmmm.... a late blooming defender who has never played at the highest level with a club? Yes, he played in the World Cup, but he got on the national team very late in his career. Considering the problems the American defense has, that's not really a ringing endorsement. If he'd come for 150K or something, do it. Decent player. But not as a substantial signing.

Seems like an odd signing for a DP. But between him and Alain Rochat it'd be a decent CB combo on paper.

DeMerit as DP? Yeah, bad idea...I mean, the name DeMerit does not exactly roll off the tongue when it comes to ideas for DPs.

Oh well, let Vancouver make this fatal error if they wish.
Still possibly the only known RPB to appear on Masterchef Canada.
    (I think?)

Great move! (for TFC and the rest of the MLS opposition).

I wonder if anyone in Vancouver made this very same comment when we signed JDG and Mista as our DP's.

Both JDG and Mista could have worked out really well. JDG really should be a box to box dynamo inspiration on our team. He should be our Steven Gerrard or Patrick Vieira (ie, in MLS terms). He's playing way below his potential because the team is not built around him, he has to fit in and that's ridiculous for a CM DP, because he;s trying to fit in to a standard that is way below what he's capable of. Buil;d the team around him like Liverpool do with Gerrard and we'd get a lot more out of him. Mista is a class player who was more of a gamble but in fairness we signed him for half a season, it was a no lose for us really (in contrast to Mo's other expensive signings, who he generally saddled to the team for long contracts that could not then be shifted).

There's JDG Gold cup 2007 and then there's JDG at ever other moment in his career. He's the guy who was known in Spain for shooting over the net on his odd array forward. Basically what we thought of Carl Robinson while he was here.

He was extensively a DM, very very minimally box-to-box, and without a doubt not an attacking mid. He does not have it in his game to be "that guy" in the middle.

If we did our homework, it would have been obvious he was a poor choice to be our play-maker.

I can't say Jay DeMerit is a good choice for DP, unless Vancouver augments its lineup with a second DP. Perhaps Vancouver will sign a striker as a DP, complimenting a strong defence with a strong offence.
