SkyDome was at least in its early years cutting edge as far as stadium design and concepts.
Even today it doesn't look all that bad. You could tell some thought and effort was put into it.
The NSS was neither. From the outset it was made a shit hole and continues to be.

Sorry Boban, I have to disagree - the SkyDome is the most unattractive ballpark in the MLB.

I think you are both right.
SkyDome was "cutting edge" in its day... mostly from a technological standpoint.
It's architectural qualities were driven by functionality.
And as a result, it's never been aesthetically pleasing.
It's a big hunk of concrete and steel.
It would be nice to see it get a make-over...
not sure how, but there must be something that would spruce it up a bit.

^ i was actually thinking of something along those lines.
Something that would add a little colour and pizazz to the exterior.
Or even something like they did with the AGO... some creative glass forms attached to the outside.
It would take some cash, but might be cheaper than building a new stadium.

Both stadiums seem to have been built at the end of an era - after SkyDome baseball parks all went for that 'old time' outdoor feel and after BMO soccer stadiums in North America seem to be taking it up a notch. At least with BMO it was never state of the art or high end, so it will be easier to upgrade it.

Could you imagine if the Blue Jays went looking for government money for a new ballpark?

BMO was built on the cheap by a company that wasn't sure if soccer was going to be a success. If they knew then what they know now, we'd have a MUCH different stadium.

Sure... next time they need to give fans a reason to renew season tickets.

Read my post again. Today, yes.
But when it was first built lots of people were in awe of it.
That never ever happened with the NSS.

Correction. They knew from day one it was going to be a success.
Only the level of success was in question.
They were more interested in pocketing the revenues.

There's some truth in that. It wasn't a total gamble on their part, but the level of success and how quickly it came caught them off guard for sure. If they knew then what they know how, we'd have a stadium like they have in NY now - and our season ticket prices would have been even higher (from day 1).

I really like BMO. Convenient, easy to get in and out of, food and beer were fucking expensive but always are. Been in football grounds all over and it's all in how much you're enjoying the day anyway, as long as you're close to the pitch and people are singing.

    I like this perspective.

I've never had a problem with BMO when I'm sitting in the stands. It's a great place to watch a game, just a 20 minute comfortable train ride from my home. Now, those who need to be pampered by amenities will have a problem with BMO, but in the end the views are great.

KC Stadium looks great, but from reading the perspectives of the owners, they planned a stadium that's a deliberate response to the stadiums that have been built the past few years. They could not have planned such a stadium in 2006.

prizby, i actually have an answer to that.
one of my buddies moved down to the states not too long ago and is working with the company thats doing a lot of the base work on the park.

doing the base work means that he has to come back and do constant checks to see how the foundation is holding up after everything's being piled up on it. making sure the stadium doesn't collapse, etc, pretty standard stuff.

so anyways, he got a tour and managed to slip out to their locker rooms and he was abso-fucking-lutely in awe over how crazy they were. he took a pic of these new fangled, high-grade hydration systems they got..

looks to be a water fountain no doubt! pure. class.

thats half the point of building a stadium. one of the main reasons is that the revenue gets controlled by the clubs. they get sponsorship to help, they get deals struck up with their cities, they get to do what they want with (for the most part). the red bulls used to play in a stadium where they'd be responsible for 80,000+ seats, where they liked it or not. on top of that, they didn't even own it, they rented it from the giants!!

ya, in it's day it was cutting edge, and even architecturally was one of the better one of it's generation, ie. big multi-purpose (metrodome, kingdome, bc place, etc). it just suffered from bad timing cause the new throwback, sport-specific stadiums started being built soon after.
