    Hey guys...

Since there seems to be alot of interest in the TV numbers, I'll post them after each match (day after usually around 4pm / Monday for weekend games) in the top post...

People can see the ratings easily here - and discuss etc in this thread...

    Thanks, Carts...

Looks like decent numbers for Saturday's match given the time/opposing team.

    Needed thread, solid idea Carts.

Actually, this one was on Sportsnet:

As for Toronto FC, who can explain the fact its game against Real Salt Lake on Sunday evening drew a paltry 25,000 viewers. Yes, the game was on only two Sportsnet channels (Ontario and Pacific) and it was up against hockey, but Slap Chop infomercials draw better than that.
Soccer, TFC at Salt Lake, Saturday, Sportsnet: 25,000**
** Ontario and Pacific channels only

Can we break down the numbers by commentators? For example... Nigel Reed vs Dobson and Forrest?

    Probably! LOL

The reports actually break it down to age groups & gender etc, but I figure the total number is what most people - before I go posting what looks like a giant sudoku after each game! LOL

McCartney, just wondering, do you know if these TV networks find these ratings acceptable?

That would be something only they could really answer...

One way to look at it is to compare them to other sports numbers (on same network or similar 'reach' network / time slot etc) - in which the rights cost much, much more...

But its more than just the number... Its all based on what you can draw in terms of $$$ in title sponsorship, commercial time, and what it brings you in terms of lead-in / audience holding etc, and if the broadcasts are part of a larger deal that brings in revenue for the company...

Its not as cut'n'dry as "small number - big number"...

Nice. Can you also get the ad rates and the cost of the rights?

Agreed. In addition there was a UFC event on that might have drawn viewership away from the TFC match as well.

It will be interesting to see how many games cbc covers in the next two years. They have done about 15 of our games, but what happens when Vancouver and then Montreal get in the league?? Will the do 28, or 40 games in the next two years?? I doubt it.

It all depends on the schedule, and the NHL, and NHL Playoffs...

The NHL will trump anything - its tough to even guess what they'll do until we see how the schedule works out...

Hypothetical Example: Toronto vs Vancouver MLS game on Thursday May 27th 2011... I'm sure CBC would like to have it, but that 'could be' Game-2 of the Stanley Cup final, so they won't committ to it... etc etc etc...

Impossible to know untill we see when weekend games for the Canadian teams, and more so, when all-Canadian matchups fall on the schedule...

stupid question - how do they get these numbers? is it a technically/digitally accurate count/read on how many teles are tuned to that station during a given time? I wonder, as some of the numbers appear low. Any idea how it compares to any given leaf telecast where the audience is equally national or regional?

    facinating. thanks.

Its a complicated system, and currently in a transition mode into a new technology, and by no means is it perfect - but it is what it is, and it's what used as a measuring stick...

In simple terms, the current system omits a tone that a pager picks up if in range - and registers etc. Once connected to the 'base' the pager transmit the data to the monitoring system... From there its a math formula etc etc etc...

This system has resulted in higher ratings (especially for sports) as it 'counts' TV tones in public places, as well as private...

In regards to comparing to a Leaf broadcast, I'll grab some random games from early in the season which cover CBC National, TSN National, SNet Regional...

    Nov.10/09 SNET ONT: Minnesota vs Toronto 7:00pm/et = 585,000
    Nov.14/09 CBC NATIONAL: Calgary vs Toronto 7:00pm/et = 1,808,000
    Nov.19/09 SNET EAST & ONT: Ottawa vs Toronto 7:00pm/et = 919,000
    Nov.21/09 CBC NATIONAL: Washington vs Toronto 7:00pm/et = 2,100,000
    Dec.01/09 TSN NATIONAL: Montreal vs Toronto 7:00pm/et = 1,400,000
Dec.09/09 TSN NATIONAL: NY Isles vs Toronto 7:00pm/et = 1,191,000

I think that's a pretty good look at the networks, in roughly the same part of the season & all 7:00pm/et starts, with both all-Canadian & a Toronto-vs-American teams competion...

As you can see - there's a trend with the networks, based on reach & the "Saturday Night" factor...

wow thats something. part of my interest with the viewing numbers is the long term benefits that high tv revenues provide teams and leagues (eg. leafs, NFL, etc.).

thanks for the insights into this.

I am pretty certain that it is Seattle, but the article I read it in didn't have specific numbers and this is going back some time..

Sportsnet Ontario getting over 123,000 viewers is a record for Sportsnet Ontario, right?

    Top post updated...

As for it being a record, I can't say off the top of my head - but that's an excellent, actually better than excellent number...

Raptor games on cable bring in similar numbers often...
