    Default Paul Dickov Considering MLS

Paul Dickov could become the next British player to try his luck in Major League Soccer.

Dickov is considering other options, including retiring to start a career in coaching, but there has also been interest in the veteran Scottish striker from MLS through Toronto FC and New York Red Bulls.

The profile of the American league has soared since David Beckham's lucrative move to LA Galaxy and many British players have opted to follow the former England captain across the Atlantic. Toronto are coached by compatriot Mo Johnston, who already has Danny Dichio, Rohan Ricketts and Carl Robinson in his squad, while former City team-mate Claudio Reyna and fitness coach Juan Carlos Osorio would be among the familiar faces in New York.

Paul Dickov (born November 1, 1972 in Livingston, West Lothian) is a Scottish footballer who currently plays as a striker for Manchester City.
Dickov started his career with Arsenal, but was never a first team regular and in 1996 he moved to Manchester City, who were then in Division One. Over six seasons at the club, Dickov experienced two promotions and two relegations, playing in three different divisions. A 2005 poll named Dickov's equalising goal in the 1999 Division Two playoff final the greatest ever Manchester City goal. Dickov left in 2002 to join Leicester City, where he stayed for two seasons and, in 2004, he signed for Blackburn Rovers, and was part of the team which qualified for the UEFA Cup in 2005–06. Upon the expiry of his Blackburn contract in 2006, he rejoined Manchester City.
In 2000, he made his debut for the Scotland national team against San Marino. As of April 2008 he has represented his country ten times, scoring one goal.

    Style of play
Although he is a striker, Dickov is better known for his tenacity than his goal-scoring exploits. In a 2003 interview with the Independent on Sunday he provided a summary of his playing style: "The ability to battle is one of the main parts of my game. I know my limits. I am not the sort who gets the ball and is then going to beat five or six players and stick it in the top corner from God knows where. But, whether I'm playing well or not, the one thing you will get from me is 110 per cent, upsetting defenders and basically giving them pain."[32] His combative approach resulted in Manchester City manager Joe Royle naming him "The Wasp",[33] and during his time at Leicester he was known as "The Pest".[34]

More of a hard-working setup man than pure goalscorer. We need a goalscorer.

No thanks. We have hard workers already, we need a goal scorer end of story.

sounds like a danny dichio on the "giving defenders pain" part.

but I agree with the above posts... we need a guy who doesn't even need to work hard to score a goal A guy who can anticipate Robert and Guevara well, who has speed, and who will finish every reasonable opportunity Robert and Guevara give him, and create his own chances when he has nothing from his teammates.
Tall order but the DP spot makes it possible.....

I hope we don't waste money on this guy, even though he currently plays(is signed by) City I would hate to see TFC spend money on him but I wouldn't mind someone else taking him off City's hands.

He would do well in the league and is by far a better option than Cunny.

He's a rare goal poacher who largely hassles defenders and holds up play. We have a guy who, on free rein, already does that AND is among the league's top scorers in Dichio. I like Dickov but he would be superfluous and the league doesn't suit his style.

+1 for pretty much everything said here.

We have a player like him in Dichio and he's stated that MLS is his second choice. You have to want to come here. We're not the Florida of the football world.

Might be the player we need to put us over the top. If he could duplicate his recent Blackpool form with TFC, he’d be a great addition.

I’d like to see someone who would have a future with the team (2-3 years at least), but I’m not going to have a closed mind to anyone per se.

I like him, but in the MLS he'd be a walking red card waiting to happen.

He'd not be an automatic starter, but I can see him working well off the big fella and can be a handful in the box. Bit of a liability with the referees in MLS, mind...

I love the guy as he scored the goal that saved City in the Div 1 playoff final in 1999 deep into stoppage time- and who else in the world would have a couple of Dicks up front? Dichio/Dichio

He could play for the academy team, they get someone sent off almost every game.

VETERAN striker Paul Dickov looks set to continue his career in Canada after being targeted by fellow Scot Mo Johnston.
Dickov - freed by Manchester City - is mulling over a one-year deal with gaffer Johnston's Toronto FC.
Former Scotland hitman Dickov has spent the last week around the club and is impressed with what's on offer.
Johnston said: "He has really enjoyed his week and the facilities we have. He is a young 35 and will solve our striker problem."
Dickov had been linked with a permanent move to Championship side Blackpool after his seven-goal loan spell there last term.

He is better than the strikers we haven, NONE of them can finish. He is not the permanent answer, but is wayyy better than Cunny.

This is a recurring theme...wonder how a poll pitting Dickov or Cunny would go.

According to the ever-reliable MLS rumours, Paul Dickov has already signed for us. Hopefully its not too much money.

And hopefully he still has some motor left in those 35 yr old legs.
