Hans Backe, late of Notts County, now coach of NYRB

Anybody want to start a pool for how many months it will be until he quits?

My problem with this hiring is that Backe has no allegiance to MLS. He hasn't stuck anywhere except 1 place... he's 57 so he's not a foreign coach you develop.
I know people hate the "recycled MLS coach" theme that goes on every year... but at least a guy like Preki or Onalfo is dedicated to MLS and will put his heart and soul into the job. Similarly, Bruce Arena or Sigi Schmidt are not gonna come in for the paycheque and leave. My guess is Backe will pull a John Carver and run off in a year.

Default Backe era begins for Shite Bulls

The Shite Bulls just hired a Euro coach with no MLS experience or knowledge.

I see they will continue with their tradtion of being shite.

Really good coach. I know this because he coached my childhood club, Aalborg BK, and led them to a Championship. He then went on to coach FC Copenhagen (won 3 titles). Was Sven-Göran Eriksson's right-hand man for a good while, too - in Mexico and Manchester City, before taking on the head coach job at Notts County.

This guy has an amazing resume:

Here's a good article on why foreign coaches, no matter how great the resume, generally fail in MLS unless the have N. American experience:

    http://www.ussoccerplayers.com/ussoc...-with-for.html

The writer lists coaches who coached world cup teams on downward in the article.
Carver and Cummins are in the list of failures that he cites, BTW.

Interestingly enough, many of these failures coached New York. Glad to see they haven't learned a single thing all these years.

MLS is a tough, physical league, that emphasizes speed, and features plastic fields, grueling travel, extreme weather, and incompetent refs. - NK Toronto

Well it’s all in perspective; I’d say that thinking of things in strictly MLS / non-MLS terms sets you up for a pretty big fall. Are teams really better off with the likes of Kurt Onalfo, fernando clavijo, Soehn just or Peter Vermes (worst hire this year) just because they have MLS experience? Not everything can be of a Preki, Arenas, Kinnear like quality.

I’m willing to bet at least one foreign hire in this league does well and this stereotype slowly dies over time.

If the guy can get the idea of dealing with an inferior budget and talent he’ll be fine here. This isn’t exactly the unique challenge everybody makes it out to be. The problem is that you have idiots like AEG that hire Ruud Gullit without thinking of the basic problems like not being able to buy your way out of trouble or managing a small roster.

Probably pushed down the list by something as note-worthy as pictures of an empty BMO field in the winter.
