    A canadian sports ICON.
It's very sad. He would only have been about 56. Too young.

the big mans heart....(and it was a big one) suddenly gave out...
He did so much for footy in Canada...+ was a great pal to Glasgow Rangers Supporters in Toronto.
many people will say that it was Pele coming to play for the Cosmo's that put footy on the map in North America....but do not underestimate the impact budgies 3x winnings of the SuperStars TV competition had on highlighting the beautiful game to North Americans....

The Toronto-born, raised-in-Vancouver Budd was best known for his remarkable athleticism he displayed in outshining much higher-profile professional athletes in winning the ABC Sports World Superstars contests against NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball and Olympic stars three consecutive times between 1977 to 1979.
His victories in the television series provoked the network broadcaster to pass a rule - known as The Budd rule
    - baring anyone from participating in the event after they had won the event three times.
During the 1978 broadcast he bettered United States Olympic pole vaulting champion Bob Seagren and Cleveland Browns star Greg Pruitt in the contest.

when i was a kid, my dad used to tell me about Budd's exploits in those 1970s Superstars contests. My dad always used it as evidence that soccer players were better athletes than other pro athletes.

I'm stunned. I remember having a brew with him at Scally's late last year watching England and Macedonia draw in Euro qualifying. He made a painful game fun to watch. He was a hell of a lot of fun to be around. He was a good lad and I want to wish his family, friends, and colleagues at the Score my condolences.

    You will be missed Budgie!

People would usually rip into him because of his performances on TV, but many people appreciated his uniqueness and enthusiasm, especially for the game.

Very rarely do I really get affected by the loss of a celebrity, but in this case I admit it has saddened my day. A true, unheralded Canadian sports icon, somebody Canadians should have come to know better, somebody who represented the underappreciated athlete in Canada.

    Gonna miss you Budgie.

Very sad news. I never met him but he was a great personality.

My condolensces to his family and friends. He died far too young and I cant begin to imagine the shock of losing such a close friend so suddenly.

so sad. A true Canadian footie icon. I remember one summer following him around southern Ontario as he ran some soccer clinics when I was in my early teens. I must have been to at least half a dozen. I learned more from him that summer than I probably did from all of my club training sessions. He will be missed.
