Canadian qualifier to face Nicaragua in CONCACAF Champions League prelim
NEW YORK - The winner of Canada's qualifying event for the CONCACAF Champions League will face the Nicaraguan champion in the preliminary round of the inaugural 16-team tournament.
The Canadian qualification features a double-round-robin between Toronto FC, the Montreal Impact and the Vancouver Whitecaps. The qualification began May 28 with Toronto FC beating the Impact 1-0.
The New England Revolution will face Trinidad and Tobago's Joe Public, while Pumas UNAM of Mexico City will play Jamaica's Harbour View in the CONCACAF preliminary round.

TFC coach wants no excuses Carver reviews road plans

Toronto FC coach John Carver will leave "no stone unturned" as he looks for the answers to the team's poor away form. While the Reds remain unbeaten at BMO Field, the defeat at Houston Dynamo on Sunday was the fourth loss out of five road games this season. Carver is reviewing all aspects of the way the team prepares for away games. "There are obviously one or two issues." said Carver. "We're going to look into everything, from travel arrangements to what we do when we get to the hotel, how long we spend there, and what our preparation is the day before the game and on the day of the game."
"I've asked the players for their feedback and they've told me what they think. It is a slightly different situation for me, because with Newcastle, the only time we had a late kick off and travelled the day before was when we played European games. One thing we always used to do was to stay on English time."

Stalteri to captain Canada in World Cup bid

It isn't often that Canada gets to be the favourite in international soccer, but that will be the case against lowly St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The two sides meet Sunday in Kingstown, St. Vincent, in the first leg of a two-match qualifying series for the 2010 World Cup tournament in South Africa. The return match is June 15 in Montreal.
“There is a danger in under-estimating a team like St. Vincent,” coach Dale Mitchell said after announcing a 19-man squad that will travel to the Caribbean islands. “The island teams are improving.
“They have good athletes and, at home, they can be dangerous. And in a two-game series, anything can happen. We've taken steps to make sure that doesn't happen.”
The winner advances to Stage 3 of qualifying in the fall in the CONCACAF zone, which will send three or four teams to South Africa.
Mitchell said he got a look at St. Vincent and the Grenadines in a friendly against Jamaica on June 3.

Canada names roster for World Cup qualifier


Coach Dale Mitchell has announced his roster for the first game of Canada's 2010 World Cup qualifying series against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Big names on the 19-man Canadian squad for the June 15 road contest in Kingstown include Toronto FC stars Jim Brennan and Greg Sutton, and Houston Dynamo forward Dwayne De Rosario.
Fulham defender Paul Stalteri was named captain of the Canadian team.
Others named to the team include European-based players forward Rob Friend (Borussia Monchengladbach, Germany), midfielder Julian de Guzman (Deportivo La Coruna, Spain) and defender Marcel de Jong (RC Roda, the Netherlands).
De Guzman has been bothered by an Achilles heel problem he suffered two weeks ago in a 3-2 loss to Brazil, but Mitchell said the midfielder could be ready to play on Sunday. "He continues to progress," Mitchell said. "We feel good about his situation."
The second leg of the playoff series is scheduled for June 20 in Montreal.

I was thinking the same thing.

Jeez, I like Carver more and more everyday.

Interesting to have him offer to let the players have a say about what can be done to improve their performances away from home.

They are the ones playing the games and he is placing the onus on them to identify the off field "distractions" to their on field showing.

Good on him. He can work on the on-field drills but off field it is very much a case of self regulation. Here is a chance for the players both individually and collectively to work toward the proper "recipe for success".
