    Interesting ...

An investment of around $250,000 has been made to install the grass for the friendly and plans are still progressing to change the turf for grass on a permanent basis. "To do a proper field that would have a proper heating system and would be entirely aerated would cost around $3.5 million. The labour strike caused a delay at City Hall but we are hoping to move forward soon. We are firstly dealing with Exhibition Place and we hope to be at the Council meeting in late September or October. There are four partners in the ownership and because this stadium was built for community use, we have to provide an alternative for that and get the other parties to agree."

It was said somewhere that the RM game would net MLSE a $3-Million profit...

If this RM game, allowed the TFC Money men to convince MLSE to sign the cheques to build a proper grass pitch - would people still be upset with the RM game...

Trying to think of the glass half full. Mid-season friendly, high ticket prices - but next season the pitch is "real" thanks to "Real"...

    lmao.....yeah okay sure!

I agree with the madrid being here portion, but this is a meaningless match which TFC should not be involved with, other than the venue....meaning; it should be two teams like madrid vs. juventus, and not vs. us.

you saying that, "this match is IMHO more important then the Islanders match," is utterly ridiculous

I must say ... they're really good at doing that! How much did the get the stadium naming rights for which they quickly pawned off to BMO for a sweet & quick return?

Last Time was August 25th, 1961... Took these picture on the Bernabeu Tour this past June to prove it:

Took this one for good measure:

p.s. FAKE grass leading to REAL grass

This might be a naīve question to ask but: would it be possible to keep the grass for the next home game?

Great Point Carts. $3 plus the $5 or so EDU money, mean at least cost should be no object to MLSE to make it happen. Just the politics.

If you're talking about the sporting side, fine. But when it comes to their facilities, MLSE has shown that they will consistently spend money.

Now before anyone jumps in tells me that MLSE got cheap with BMO Field and should have built a better stadium, well there are a ton of factors that prevented that from happening (miore than simply "ML$E is cheap lolz0rs"), and this isn't what I'm arguing.

At the ACC, the ice was once considered the worst (or one of the worst) in the entire NHL. This was due to the arena's proxmity to the lake and the humidity levels that that proximty brings. MLSE spent millions upgrading the ice and installing new dehumidifiers to improve the situation, and since then there have been no compaints about the ice.

There are parallels between the ACC ice situation and the grass issue at BMO.

If anything MLSE tries to provide the best facilities for its teams (but obviously on the personnel/management side they've been far from successful), and that's why I believe the grass situation will be improved soner rather than later.

Also, they've shown that they are very image conscious. At the ACC, they installed a brand new scoreboard/sound system that cost them millions and represents no direct return for that investment (monetarily-wise). The shitty state of the turf is an image problem for TFC, another reason why I believe it will be a high priority for the suits on Bay and Lakeshore.

Again, none of what I said speaks to the sporting side of the equation. Their record in that regard is what it is.
Correct. They try to do it cheaply first. Only after much debate and dissension they are forced to change at the fans expense.

Are you really suggesting that they built the ACC on the cheap? Seriously?

I'd love to see what kind of argument you can come up with to back up such a claim.

there's some great points in this thread. here's what'll make everyone happy: we get real permanent grass, they take Velez and Barrett and we get to sell the Ronaldo pee pee grass then I think this game is a great idea!

out of the toronto star today

"Hunter, who put the price tag at about $3.5 million, including a heating system for spring and fall as well as drainage and aeration, said MLSE, which owns TFC, agrees and is ready to pay the cost."

now apparently MLSE is making 3M off the game

    seems fit

    still complaining about the friendly?

the issue now isnt about who will pay for it.

im glad that MLSE is going to pay for it....they do have a bit of spare change anyway.

the issue is that when BMO is all grass, it will only be played on for games.

no community use......hardly any practice. its TFC Games....maybe the odd local final.

So now we have to build or find another arena near by that will take over the community use that BMO currently deals with

i'm really hoping that when they go to council on this, they've got everything in place for community use. Cuz you KNOW all the Miller haters on council like Rob Ford are going to whine and complain about the taxpayer losing out if everything is not 100% in order. Heck, even if everything is in order, Ford will complain.

TFC fans also need to know the dates of the council consideration, and must show up in force at the meetings on this. See what happened with the cyclists and the Jarvis street reconstruction when they showed up to give support to bike lanes.

i'd suggest saying the PRB's buy a shit ton of it, and throw it back on the field after one of the games.
maybe they'll get a clue then?
