Local star de Guzman turns down Toronto FC

National team player nixes $2.75 million offer, hopes to stay in Europe
    Daniel Girard
In one of the toughest losses of the season for Toronto FC, Scarborough's Julian de Guzman has turned down an offer to become the club's highest-paid player.
The 28-year-old Canadian international midfielder, who has spent nearly a decade playing in Spain and Germany, told TFC officials this week he's looking to continue his career in Europe rather than suit up for the home side in a two-year deal worth $2.75 million.

The midfielder will travel with the squad for the first time for the match at New England (Saturday at 8:00 p.m. live on GOLTV.) "I'm excited to get to this moment," said Sanyang. "I have been preparing for this for a long time and I think if I get the chance to play everything will go well."

    Gomez shines in TFC loss
    Ryan Johnston
Fans were right to throw (glasses of water) on the field in the dying moments of Toronto FC's seventeen-shot-no-goal loss to the Puerto Rico Islanders in the first-leg of the CONCACAF Champions League preliminary round. However, it is uncertain if the (glasses of water) were directed at the right team.

[Quick note: Don't throw stuff on the field, seriously. Especially those expensive (glasses of water)]

    TFC failing in crucial week
    Gerry Dobson
If this was supposed to be the kick start to the week that was going to make or break TFC's season, then the first crack has already appeared.
It's a familiar refrain but it's the truth. Too many chances missed, and a failure to defend the most basic play, even one they knew was coming, did them in again. Head coach Chris Cummins put it that way rather bluntly in his post game address in the aftermath of the 1-0 loss to Puerto Rico. And it's not like it's the first time.

And Sir Bobby Robson passed away this morning. Not TFC news I know, but will be a big deal to many. Lost his battle with cancer. At least he was here to watch the charity match in his name the other day, standing ovation on the way out, he deserved nothing less.

Yes, he was a true gentleman and wonderful person. What a sad day this is. I remember he stayed at my aunt's guesthouse in Bermuda once when I was a small kid and sent me a signed photo - I was so overjoyed - he was England manager at the time. Very, very sad. RIP, Sir Bobby, we will miss you.

Well, Mo has confirmed a few things:

-he doesn't want a 30+ year old dp
-he wants the dp to be Canadian
-he doesn't think there are many out there

so........we're never going to see a dp while mo is in charge.... He's as much as said so

    kinda sucks

I don't see this as a bad thing....why would you not want to land a player in his prime. Yes...it will be much harder to attain his services, but I would much rather have a spring chicken, than an old fart.

Read the quote below from JDG's agent. LOL...someone is on suicide watch !! Do you get the feeling they wanted the TFC deal ??? ha ha ha

But Courtney James of Kutos Management, de Guzman's North American representative based in Toronto, said more than saying no to the deal, "time just ran out" for the defensive midfielder to give TFC a decision as he awaits a contract with another team in Europe.
"The door is left open as far as both sides are concerned," James said last night, adding de Guzman thought TFC's handling of the deal was "first class" and if he returns to North America to play in Major League Soccer "Toronto would be his first choice."
"He's not snubbing Toronto," James said of de Guzman, who went to Deportivo in 2005 after three seasons in the German Bundesliga with Hannover 96 and two years with FC Saarbrucken of Germany's second division. "Ever since he was a little boy he's wanted to play in Europe and he still wants to pursue that dream and I think, in the same situation, anyone would do the same."

Thats a good point CR, I thought the same when I read it but it could be how they phrased it..I heard 10 over 3 years etc...and this seems lower, but maybe its 2.75 for 2 years + 1 player option plus the signing bonus etc...if the end result was 10M over 3 years + some incentive money thats a good offer

No...I didn't mean to say that it's bad that he doesn't want a guy over 30.

I'm just frustrated that he's basically ruled out getting a DP while he's in charge.

Where are we going to find a Canadian player, in his prime, suits our needs, and who is worthy of DP money. There was only one, and that was JDG.

Atiba...maybe...but not really what we need.
Edgar...maybe...what we need (sort of) but probably won't come as he will want to develop in Europe.

Mo wants a guy who is at his peak and Canadian and worthy of the cash. It just doesn't exist. Combine that with the idea that Mo is getting a contract extension for another couple years and it means: no DP.

    That's what kinda sucks.

ps.....it all depends on the old fart. I would much rather have a great old fart (GBS) than a shitty spring chicken (Ricketts)

If the numbers in the above article are correct then I think the cash offered to JDG is far more resonable than some of the other figures that were floating about.
One thing that does make me happy is the thought of going after Rob Friend (ie Kenny Cooper 2.0)
Now there's someone who'd rip the league a new arse.
He's a far better header than Cooper and with the poor marking around the MLS he'd be able to nod in buckets of goals.

Oh and the thing about the million dollar signing bonus? Didn't realize we were allowed to do something like that. That will help our efferts in signing a DP in the future.
