    Mornin'

    TFC has chance at spotlight
    Chris Young
It isn't quite 10 days that'll shake the world. But the next week and a half may well be the most intriguing stretch in Toronto FC's short history.
The club that has had no trouble selling out its stadium since day one, but nowhere near that success establishing itself beyond BMO Field, has a wide-open chance to grab the spotlight. (If you've watched them at all this year, those wide-open chances aren't easily converted.)

BMO Field readies for first ever CONCACAF home and home
    Lance Hornby
There will be seats for about 1,000 more fans at BMO Field for upcoming games against the Puerto Rico Islanders and Real Madrid, while a couple of injured Toronto FC players will be on the bench as the team starts a busy stretch of four games in nine days.

Injuries mount for TFC ahead of CCL
RYAN JOHNSTON The injury bug has struck Toronto FC on the eve of its first-ever CONCACAF Champions League game.
On Tuesday midfielder Amado Guevara missed training for a second-straight day with a rib injury. The Honduran was substituted after 22 minutes in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Columbus Crew and went for x-rays on Monday, but no update has been provided.

TFC ready for Champions League debut
Reds play Puerto Rico Islanders in Preliminary Round
    TorontoFC.ca
For Toronto FC, the goal is simple. The Reds must beat Puerto Rico Islanders over two legs to advance to the Group Stage of the CONCACAF Champions League. The home leg takes place at BMO Field on Wednesday night (8 p.m. live on GOLTV) with the return game in Puerto Rico on August 4th.

Caribbean Powerhouse Stands in the Way to Champions League Group Stage
    Asif Hossain / TorontoFC.ca
2008-09 Champions League semifinalists Puerto Rico are one of three Caribbean Football Union (CFU) representatives to the tournament this season. Last year the Islanders were ousted from the CONCACAF premier football tournament after a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Cruz Azul in Mexico City. Despite scoring an away goal in extra time - only to concede a tying goal 7 minutes later - Islanders lost 4-2 in penalties following a 3-3 aggregate. In league play, Puerto Rico were the USL First Division Regular Season Champions in 2008 and reached the playoff finals before losing to Vancouver. This year the club sits third in United Soccer Leagues' First Division with 35 points from 22 matches. The club was on a six-game unbeaten streak until losing 4-2 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC last week in a rain delayed match. In that contest the Islanders sat eight of their regulars in wait for Wednesday's match against Toronto FC. Needless to say, this year's CFU Club Championship runner-up attaches great value to their 2009-10 Champions League prospects.

Southern exposure there for TFC's taking
    LANCE HORNBY
This isn't man landing on the moon, but if Toronto FC gets a few minutes of TV time in the soccer hotbeds of the Caribbean and Spain, it will be one giant kick for the three-year-old team. TFC gets its first taste of CONCACAF Champions League play tonight against the Puerto Rico Islanders (8 p.m., BMO Field, GOL-TV), with a return match there on Tuesday and then Friday's David vs. Goliath friendly against Real Madrid at BMO.

    Must-win game for TFC
Puerto Rico Islanders visit BMO Field in Champions League opener
    Ben Rycroft
As Toronto FC embarks on its bid for the glory of the CONCACAF Champions League tonight, it’s become apparent that anything besides an outright win by the Reds at BMO Field will be considered a loss.
TFC knows this. Their opponent, the Puerto Rico Islanders, know this. And that’s why you can expect the Islanders to come out and play a bland, boring brand of soccer — the same kind the tiny USL-1 squad rode from its beaches to the semi-finals of last year’s Champions League.

The Toronto Start article said that Gomez will partner Garcia in the middle. If we needed any more proof that Velez's time is shortly to end...

Cummins remarks about the team not being ablr to play on the turf is one thing, but his quotes about them playing with a better spark away from home....?

    WTF?
He does know we're the team in red at these games too right...?

    nevermind.

it was all tied up after both legs and extra time (not injury time) was required - which ended tied 1-1 (no away goals rule in effect) and penalties were needed.

Well, there goes Jamie Smith...to the Crapids
    http://rapidsundercurrent.blogspot.com/2009/07/head-coach-gary-smith-comments-on.html

"Jamie Smith has been brought in predominantly as a wide player. He is versatile enough to play on both flanks as well as an attacking midfielder player."

Exactly something we dont have, wonder why he didnt join up.

Anybody else been humming or singing that Heineken Champions League song...? I know its for UEFA, but I hear 'champions league' and that tune just jumps into my head... LOL...

I'm jacked for tonight as well - maybe a rainy day & night is a good thing - that turf plays different in the rain, and we've had plenty of practice playing in wet conditions this summer! (or what was supposed to be summer lol)..

    Carts...

Interesting (from the CONCACAF article Century Sam posted)

"Defender Cristian Arrieta leads Puerto Rico with seven goals – and also ranks second among scoring leaders in the United Soccer Leagues First Division – while Jamaican international striker Nicholas Addlerly has contributed four. "
