Toronto FC coach Chris Cummins said Chad Barrett took it as "a kick in the backside" to be benched for the start of last night's game.
But the striker responded, coming on in the 15th minute as a substitute and scoring the game's lone goal on a brilliant shot late in the first half as TFC knocked off the Montreal Impact 1-0 in the Canadian Championship before 19,872 fans at BMO Field.

TORONTO - The manner in which Toronto FC disposed of the visiting Montreal Impact on Wednesday night implied that the Reds had revenge on their minds.
Chad Barrett scored the only goal of the game in the 35th minute on a beautiful one-touch-and-volley blast from outside the penalty area. Toronto FC head coach Chris Cummins decided to give Chad Barrett "a kick on the backside" by not starting the dangerous forward last night against the Montreal Impact.
Barrett has had his chances in MLS play this season, but has only scored twice, so Cummins felt that a lesson in humility might be in order for last night's Nutrilite Canadian championship match.

For the first time since arriving at BMO Field following last July's trade from the Chicago Fire, the young striker found himself out of the starting lineup last night and relegated to a place on the bench.
But following an 16th-minute injury to Marvell Wynne, who left after pulling his hamstring, Barrett was thrown into the fray against the Montreal Impact, and responded in style, providing the winning margin for the home side in a 1-0 victory.

TORONTO -- The early, and unexpected, insertion of Chad Barrett proved fruitful for Toronto FC, as the striker scored the winner in a 1-0 win against the Montreal Impact in a Nutrilite Canadian Championship match on Wednesday night at BMO Field.
When Marvell Wynne left the game with a hamstring injury in the 16th minute, Barrett came on as a substitute and made a great individual effort in accepting a pass, juggling the ball to himself and firing a laser shot into the Montreal goal.
