Dominant Toronto FC hands Chivas first loss
Revamped lineup looks strong in shutting down top team in MLS
    Daniel Girard

A home field advantage once more.
Toronto FC, solid performers at BMO Field in their initial two years of Major League Soccer, hit the win column for the first time at home in three tries this season, posting a well-earned 1-0 win last night over previously undefeated Chivas USA.
"I think we dominated from the first whistle," midfielder Carl Robinson said of the effort before 19,915 fans.

TORONTO — If John Carver's self-imposed absence from the field was an attempt to galvanize his Toronto FC team, give full marks to the coach's most prescient coaching decision of the season so far.
With assistant Chris Cummins at the helm Wednesday night, Honduran midfielder Amado Guevara scored the only goal of the game and Toronto FC chalked up their first home win of the season, handing the league-leading Chivas USA their first defeat.

Toronto FC snap skid with win over Chivas
    John F. Molinaro

It was a recipe for disaster, but it turned out to be a feast of good fortune for Toronto FC.
Few gave the struggling Canadian club much of a chance Wednesday night against Chivas USA, the best team in Major League Soccer, especially with Toronto lacking the influential Dwayne De Rosario in the starting lineup.
But Toronto overcame the absence of its injured star midfielder — and its head coach — to earn a 1-0 victory over Chivas thanks to Amado Guevara's first-half goal.

    Toronto FC blanks Chivas USA

Toronto FC head coach John Carver had a good view of his team's first home victory of the MLS season Wednesday night, 1-0 at BMO Field over previously undefeated Chivas USA on a first-half goal by midfielder Amado Guevara.Carver watched the match from a booth in the media box area above the stands while assistant Chris Cummins handled things from the sideline. And it was Cummins who addressed the media after the game.
"John's obviously got his reasons and I don't want to talk about it," Cummins said after the game.

    Reds get their mojo back
Home win boosts spirits at BMO Field
    By LANCE HORNBY,

Everyone was looking for coach John Carver on the pitch, but Toronto FC certainly found its "A" game in the coach's absence.
With Carver watching somewhere from the private boxes at BMO Field, either to try to shake up the team or because he didn't trust himself not to run afoul of officials again, FC won its first home game by toppling previously undefeated Chivas USA 1-0.
"John had his reasons," said assistant Chris Cummins, who ran the show on the field.

Toronto FC Take Down Chivas USA For First Loss
    By Talha Zaheer

Toronto FC recorded their first home win of the season and their first-ever points against Chivas USA. In doing so, they also inflicted a first league defeat on the Western Conference leaders. This was TFC's first clean sheet of the season as they bested the league leaders 1-0 at BMO field.

    First Half:

Toronto began the game with a whole host of changes from the last match: Danny Dichio, Pablo Vitti and Marco Velez started at the expense of Fuad Ibrahim, Kevin Harmse and the injured Dwayne De Rosario. The most profound change, however, was on the touchline where assistant coach Chris Cummins presided over proceedings as head coach John Carver sat this game out for unknown reasons.

    In Cummins we trust
    By RYAN JOHNSTON

TORONTO -- The banner could have read 'In Carver We've Lost' as Toronto FC coach John Carver was nowhere to be found prior to his team's 1-0 win over Chivas USA on Wednesday night.

The aforementioned banner is, of course, a tongue-in-cheek reference to a banner unfurled by supporters at BMO Field in 2008 that read, 'In Carver We Trust'. But the absence of the fan-favourite coach on Wednesday night was no joke as the whispering and speculating spread like wildfire through the media ranks before confirmation came that Carver chose to watch the match against Chivas USA from the media gondola.

Reds Show Balance In Big Win

Toronto FC's players and coaching staff have talked at length this season about how so many of the team's problems seem to stem from defensive breakdowns at key moments, and the Reds' seeming inability to keep up their intensity for an entire match. On Wednesday night, TFC seemed to solve both of these problems in a 1-0 win against Chivas USA. Against an unbeaten Red-and-White side who entered the game tied for second in the league with eight goals scored, Toronto delivered a sterling defensive effort that limited Chivas to a mere three shots.
"Defensively things were right for us today," said team captain Jim Brennan. "We had good shape, good balance and we made it very difficult for them."

Guevara Lifts Toronto FC Over Chivas

TORONTO -- A first-half goal by Amado Guevara paved the way for Toronto FC's 1-0 victory against Chivas USA on Wednesday night at BMO Field. The win was the first of the season for TFC at BMO Field, and their first-ever victory against the Red-and-White after going 0-4 against the Western Conference side over the previous two seasons. Toronto also became the first team this season to defeat first-place Chivas, who entered the match atop the MLS overall table with a 4-0-1 record.

It was funny that ½ a dozen people asked me where Chivas is from...All the more reason to move that deadbeat (fanwise) team.

No, with respect for your effort in doing this every morning....I think you're wrong. It was a nice game, but we still have 24 games to go.

Over the course of the season, it's possible that the biggest news last night was Carver's absence. There are a number of weird elements to it.

    Yeah it is Conspiracy.

Biggest news last night was TFC won against only unbeaten team in MLS.

It doesn't really matter how many games are left,we play one game at the time and only with that approach you can succeed in any sport.

The only weird element is that for some reason ppl.just can let go of Carver,no matter what he does.

Yeah, great morning reading and the win is the most important thing, but it's hard to deny that Carver's absence on the touchline is intriguing. For now, I still choose to take it at face-value, that he wanted to get a different perspective on the match. There's no reason to doubt what the club has said.

However, if we're asking for theories, if there's more to it than meets the eye, then I'll go with the guess that maybe TFC suspended Carver (rather than the league) for one match for getting fined and maybe bringing the club into disrepute or something.

Sounds like there is quite a bit of association with the guy who is resigning if you ask me.

Carver getting fined gave us the idea, but the fund raiser is for the CNIB not him.

Yeah, and when someone dies, I give a donation in honour of the person who died. I don't give the donation to the dead person, I give it to the charity. The donation still has to do with the person who died.

Your giving a donation to the CNIB in leu of Carver's fine. The guy who just quit TFC today. Sure... give to the CNIB, but why the fuck still present it as matching Carver's fine?

It's also been suggested there is a link between the ref being blind and giving to the CNIB. This is about as unfortunate as Rohan Rickets wristband supporting the Children's hospital with the slogan on them that said, "Toronto till I die".

I'm pretty sure the CNIB would be a little offended by the link of what they do with calling a Ref blind and def.
