Ya that surprises me that there isn't nearly as much US teams in there, and the only one that is isn't even for an MLS team! Or am I wrong and they are FC Dallas's team? But in any case that is amazing for our young guys to take on the likes of the AC Milan youth team.

I believe our academy is well ahead of most other MLS teams. Most teams have been slow to get theirs going.

Wow, those are some academies from huge clubs. Are our boys expected to do well or just get slaughtered? A good showing would be enormous for us.

I'm flying down to Dallas Sunday morning to help some NCAA friends scout the tournament. It's my 5th year scouting the u16s. Overall, in the 20+ years I coached, I've never seen a tournament with such a consistent high level of competition.

Those of you with kids, or youth coaching - if ever you get the chance to participate, do it. First class and quality all the way. Just about every D1 & D3 NCAA program will have scouts there.

D2s don't have athletic scholarships, a very small % of D2 schools attend. Most players attending Dallas Cup are intent in negotiating full rides. Not a lot of D2s have that kind of flexibility.

I am curious then why would D3 go and not 2, what advantage do they have, I am not trying to sound too dumb it is that I really do not know much about the US college soccer system.

Student population determines D1, D2, D3. Bigger schools = more $$$.
But lots of private post- secondary schools are classified as D3, $$$.
Ivy schools don't have athletic scholarships and they too often get lumped in with the D3s, but they too are quasi privates - i.e. Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Princeton.

Many State U's are D2 - public money, smaller student populations.

Schools can move between programs, just depends on Revenue vs expenses.

Soccer wise:
DI women's offer 14 full athletic scholarships max. per season.
DI men offer 9.9 full athletic scholarships max. per season.
D2 women's offer 9 full athletic scholarships max. per season.
D2 men offer 9 full athletic scholarships max. per season.

D1 & D2s also subsidize athletic scholly's with academic $$$; which is how the D3 & Ivy schools get their athletes. And financial aid (inability to pay-hardship)

Don't forget,
many rosters are 25 players +, so scholly's are split
full funded scholly's are few and are between, can a school afford to fund all soccer scholarships - some can, some can't.
Also, factor in how many sports a school will host...

Football and basketball are head counts sports - fully funded. Soccer isn't.
Another way to expalin it is football and basketball generate $$$; soccer costs $$$.

As far as I can make it out:
1 canadian team in the U19 bracket
4 canadian teams in the U17 bracket
2 canadian teams in the U16 bracket
0 canadian teams in the U15, U14 or U13 brackets

Strange... I would have sworn that a team from Ottawa attended this event last year and did fairly well

Last year, Liverpool's entry destroyed all comers.

Look for the Whitecaps entry to do well; they learned much last year and are an improved side this year. So I hear.

Also, coaching plays a big part in this tournament; professional coaches.
TFC has Bent & Neeley.

Tigres (Mexico) lost in the final last year; they are a regular side in this group. Loads of talent and experience.

And you have to figure that Manchester City knows that Liverpool won it last year and they probably know how talented that squad was. So they are not coming over as just tourists.

TFC will see some good sides - good luck boys. Hope to squeeze in a match.

Just curious how do bigtime teams like Michigan state, Ohio state, florida state, oklahoma state, kansas state, penn state always have sch good teams if they've got less money or are they the exceptions and the reason why you said "many" state u's

My buddy who is in the Vancouver residency program is absolutely pumped for it. From the sounds of it, they expect to be competitive against everyone and there is no sense of awe facing big name teams.

The list I use for my purposes, which does not list all 700+ men's programs, reflects many State Us at the D2 level.
