    Default Possible Expansion: Des Moines?!

I know it's MLS Rumours but has anyone else heard of this?!

    http://www.mls-rumors.net/2009/03/ex...es-moines.html

I heard they have a bustling gay district.

Still possibly the only known RPB to appear on Masterchef Canada.
    (I think?)

I think this was one started by a RPB on purpose to mess with mls-rumours. Check out the KC On The Cheap thread.

They draw a ton of people to PDL games, they are in the same division as Thunder Bay, I went down with the team for one game last year and they have some proper interest in footy. They send about 10-15 people with their team when they come up here too.

I don't know about MLS, but to say they don't know or appreciate soccer would be wrong.

this is probably the dumbest thread we've ever had.

also, what does the gay community in Iowa have to do with a football team?

It's a 3 horse race between Montreal, St. Louis, and Ottawa.
Outside chances: Miami, Atlanta, New York.

This rumour is retarded, even by the standard of MLS Rumours. While it's true that Des Moines' PDL team draws well - 3,400 fans per game last season - one must remember that Des Moines is a small city, and small cities and small football clubs go together quite well. The factors that make a PDL team successful are quite different than the factors that make an MLS team successful. To extrapolate the success of an amateur club that plays only a few months of the year to that of a top-tier club that has a much busier schedule is beyond stupid.

As much fun as it is to laugh at the absurd crap that winds up on MLS Rumours, can we stop linking to that web site? MLS Rumours is about as accurate as "the guy I know who knows a guy who knows a guy."

I think you guys are seriously underestimating the potential in Des Moines. My group that stopped over in the place en route to KC ran into plenty of soccer fans in the city. Remember, we're talking about the midwest here - their high school sport stadiums are bigger than the ones we have for universities here in Canada. I think a team representing the region as a whole could be very lucrative indeed...

I'm just going to go ahead and assume that LeRoy from Gerogia was a Silverbacks fan.

and the 'sizeable' hispanic population thing works amazingly for real salt lake or chivas?

i believe this is a credible rumour. but not all rumours come to pass, and i suspect this won't.

    someone's taking shots at me.

    here's an argument for you:

    - des moines' metro population is just over 500,000. (shit, let's put a team in oakville, i'm sure it would be more successful)

    - teams with metro areas 4-5 times bigger (or 40-50 times if you count chivas) are STILL struggling in MLS.

some big shot owner might come out of nowhere and get a team. but it would fail, and fail hard.

in north america, we practice something called capitalism, where people do just about everything they can to make money.

putting a top level soccer team in des moines would be a bad investment.

we're not all soccer analysts. some of us just have this little thing called common sense.

Des Moines is too small time for MLS at this late stage. If this was 1998 or something, I could see it. But Rochester disappeared as a potential expansion site, yet Rochester has a much bigger population, already gets strong USL support and has a decent, expandable stadium.

These B-level cities are no longer on the radar, in my opinion.

I also think the next round of expansion is gonna see the bids of places like New York City (the owners of the Mets have shown interest in a stadium next to the new Shea), Miami again, Montreal (hopefully, if somebody knocks some sense in Joey), St. Louis (if Cooper finds more rich buddies). Des Moines would have no shot at 1 of 2 spots in that fight..... Although I bet Garber would thoroughly investigate their bids to keep the bidding pool large

I think Des Moines is a stupid idea, but they would have very little competition for sports/entertainment dollars in the area. Still, I can't imagine a league that has a team in Des Moines but doesn't have one in Montreal.

    no shots being shot

    just out of curiosity

so eveyone who supports Toronto lives in the CITY of toronto?
so everyone who supports New York lives in the CITY of New Jersey?
so everyone who supports Chicago lives in the CITY of Chicago?

common sense goes past the fact that you dont only look at the city, but its surrounding areas

common sense, is what some of us are lacking....
but common sense would tell us to check ourselves before we talk about others

All of those teams are in a Metro area that have a higher population than the entire state of Iowa.

Des Moines is a tier below b-level cities. Its more like C or D level in my opinion ... no way should MLS be expanding in those markets.

The Denver metro area population is 5x more than Des Moines, SLC is double. It makes no sense to add a franchise that's weaker than two of the weakest existing teams. In addition to having more population, Denver and SLC are both weatlthy cities that have a business culture. I don't think Des Moines has much of either.

    that's what's called a metro area. as i referenced.

but, for fun, let's try this.

des moines is in the middle of iowa, surrounded by a few suburbs and then plains, plains as farrrrr as the eye can see.

closest cities are giants iowa city (150k) and omaha (700k) -- and they're 175-250 kms away respectively.

so we're looking at a population of roughly 1.5 million within a 250km radius. that's STILL less every METROPOLITAN (oh, there's that word again) city that fields a team in the MLS.

And this is within 250 kms! HOW MANY american soccer fans (if they do truly exist) will drive two hours to see a home game. in the winter?

    HAH!

    next argument, please.

try to make this one a little more challenging.
