Reds top KC for first opener win
Guevara scores twice to power Toronto to 3-2 victory
By Bob Rusert / MLSnet.com Staff

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Toronto FC began their 2009 MLS campaign Saturday evening by grabbing a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Wizards at a sold-out CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Team captain Jim Brennan put Toronto in the lead late in the first half and two goals from Amado Guevara in the second half sealed the historic win.
Davy Arnaud scored two remarkable goals for the home side, but they weren't enough as the triumph was the Reds' first season-opening away win in their short three-year history.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Amado Guevara scored twice in the second half, leading Toronto FC to a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Wizards in the teams' season opener Saturday night.
Jim Brennan also scored in Toronto's first win against the Wizards, which came despite two thundering goals by Kansas City's Davy Arnaud. Toronto, an expansion team in 2007, had scored only once in the teams' six previous matches.
That goal came in a 1-1 draw on Sept. 1, 2007; last season, Kansas City went 2-0-1 against Toronto, outscoring the Reds 4-0 over three matches.

Toronto FC wins MLS season opener

Old standbys and new faces propelled Toronto FC to victory Saturday night.
Captain Jim Brennan scored on a brilliant setup from Dwayne De Rosario, and Amado Guevara added a pair of goals to guide Toronto to 3-2 decision over the hometown Kansas City Wizards in the Major League Soccer regular-season opener for both teams.
Saturday's victory was only Toronto's fifth on the road since joining MLS in 2007, and also marked the first time the club won its season opener in three tries.

    Toronto FC Claims Away Win

Toronto FC held on for their first away win of the season, showing early signs of being genuine MLS cup contenders. An entertaining game in Kansas witnessed 5 goals. Amado Guevara and Davy Arnaud both bagged braces with TFC captain Jim Brennan scoring the opener.
Adrian Serioux was commanding in the
Toronto defense as the other off-season acquisition Dwayne De Rosario provided the inventive spark that exposed Kansas City. Despite winning and then missing a penalty, De Rosario deservedly picked up the man of the match award.

A promising start for new-look Toronto FC
Guevara nets pair to lead rebuilt side to victory in opener

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – With Toronto FC's off-season acquisitions of offensively gifted players Dwayne De Rosario and Pablo Vitti, it was easy to forget about Amado Guevara.
But the Honduran international reminded everyone of his talents here last night.
Guevera scored two goals in the space of 10 minutes early in the second half as TFC defeated the Kansas City Wizards 3-2 before a sellout crowd of 10,385 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

    TFC shows early promise
Three-goal outburst suggests goal-scoring woes are over behind them
    By ROB LONGLEY, SUN MEDIA

It was big talk entering the season, especially from a team whose underachieving corporate cousins are named Raptors and Maple Leafs.
But the no longer fledgling Toronto FC showed it may just be ready to deliver now rather than in the distant future after a brilliant start to the Major League Soccer season last night in Kansas City.
Two second-half goals by Amado Guevara and a smashing Reds debut by Scarborough native and Canadian international Dwayne De Rosario vaulted TFC to a 3-2 win over the Wizards at Community America Ballpark.

What a great match! It was a totally different feeling last night watching TFC. I felt like they might win 5 or 6-2. The boys were buzzing around creating chance after chance, brilliant!

Well that KC stadium last night is a temporary stadium for KC while their new soccer stadium gets built. It's a very small stadium, and apart from a few empty spaces it looked pretty full to me. BMO is always listed as sold out for most TFC home games, but there are always many empty seats visible at BMO during games. Tickets are sold but not everybody who buys tickets show up for whatever reason, same as in KC last night I guess.

The KKKrew barely managed a draw in their opener. The pic they have on their website is hilarious:

What a dream start to the season. I'm about as optimistic as I can get at this point. I would've been more than happy with a point to be honest, but this is awesome. I thought we were strong through and through, and we can't really blame anyone on the two KC goals. Those were fluke goals, really - and not a case of our D getting ripped apart like we've seen so many times before. We had chances for more goals, too, and if you add the missed penalty, you come away with a game that quite frankly we dominated to the point of embarrasing KC. I hope we can carry this into the next game - and then have a home opener with a crowd full of energy and excitement.

I guess he missed the game last year when Toronto beat Kansas 2-0

Great night at Joes ... thank you to the dudes who kept the singing going while I was bitting my nails between drinks.

Time for Shoeless to spend some money on a bathroom reno ... I think some downstair restaurants in Kapuskasing are cleaner and have more room to take a leak ... holy fuck ... I think airplane seats have more elbow room ! Sound system in the bathroom is the only thing that works.

Is the field (I mean baseball field) smaller in KC or was I drinking too much?

Who read Steve Simmons' bit in the Sun today? I know, shame on me for reading it.

Either way, he takes a shot at TFC in it.

Its hilarious the amount of media types in this city who feel compelled to take shots at the team for no reason whatsoever (other than to drive reader/listenership).

Simmons is not Bob MaCown though.

Apart from McClown's neverending quest to slam soccer, I can listen to most of the stuff he says. Simmons, on the other hand, is a humourless, witless, joysucking, fat shitball of evil who's columns are about the biggest waste of space in journalism. The only person who thinks highly of his work is himself.

I agree. Simmons is not Bob McCown. He's worse - a complete waste of space even at the best of times. At least McCown knows what he's talking about, when he's not blabbering on about his hate of all things footy.

At BMO people also forget that there's always at least 1000 people at the beer garden instead of their seats.

I just breezed over it and I think I actually lost IQ points while doing it.
I especially love how he insinuated that Brodeur's injury was from his butterfly style (and not, you know, from a muscle tear from working out too much).
But enough about this moron, back on to more important things...
