Okay, I wanted to ask this question for a while - do rivalries ever really do any good?
Now that Cathal Kelly has come out and said how good rivalries are, I'm even more convinced that they aren't.
"It doesn't matter if we get promoted as long as you beat ____ twice," is about the worst thing we can say. we've just told the management and the team that we don't care about championships.
The other line in the article that's scary is the, "Like the Leafs-Habs rivalry." I grew up in Montreal in the 70's and moved to Toronto in the 90's. That's when I found out there was apparently some rivalry between Montreal and Toronto. It meant nothing in Montreal. The Canadiens only care about the Cup. Beating Toronto was no sweeter than beating St. Louis or LA or anybody else. The Habs rivals are every other team in the league.
That's what happens with rivalries - the 'big team' doesn't really give a shit and the little team looks like an insecure girlfriend, obsessed with what the big team thinks.
I would hate to see TFC think it's more important to beat some team 2-3 times a season than win championships.
What do you all think?
