    Mornin'

Hometown defender gets his wish as TFC finally gets Serioux
`It's long overdue' says Scarborough native as Toronto deals with FC Dallas for defender
    Daniel Girard

Adrian Serioux's first stint with Toronto FC lasted only a matter of hours. A 2006 expansion draft acquisition, he was promptly shipped off in a trade later that same day.
This time around, he's much more prominent in the team's plans.
Serioux, a 29-year-old Canadian national team defender from Scarborough, was picked up yesterday in a trade with FC Dallas for Toronto's first-round pick in next year's Major League Soccer SuperDraft and allocation money.
"It's long overdue, I guess," Serioux said in an interview last night from Florida where he had just finished training with his new teammates for the first time.

The Canadian Shield blooms for Toronto FC
    Nigel Reed

It has taken him two and a half years but he's finally home, apparently ready to forgive and forget.
The addition of Adrian Serioux to the Toronto FC roster is another significant piece in the jigsaw puzzle which GM Mo Johnston and head coach John Carver are trying to solve before the start of the season, now less than a month away.
Big, strong, aggressive, experienced and Canadian, Serioux has all the credentials to be the right man for the centre-half vacancy at BMO Field. The fact that he has a Rory Delap-esque ability to turn a throw-in into something resembling a scud missile will also be a more than useful weapon in the coming campaign.

Toronto FC gets Serioux in Dallas deal

oronto FC bolstered its defence Tuesday by acquiring veteran Canadian defender Adrian Serioux in a trade with FC Dallas. In exchange for Serioux, Dallas receives Toronto's first-round pick in the 2010 Major League Soccer draft and an undisclosed amount of allocation money.
"This is another great signing for our team," said Toronto general manager Mo Johnston.

    Filling a Serioux hole
    Gerry Dobson

A new day, a new face in training camp for Toronto FC.

But that's not so unusual. That's the way it’s been going since the team arrived for their latest Florida leg of camp. No point in naming names just yet. One day's arrival could be the next day's departure. We've seen that movie before.
That's not the case for one name in particular. The familiar dreadlocks of Adrian Serioux were clearly visible when the players hit the training pitch Tuesday. Only those who didn't play in Monday's impressive 3-0 win over Swedish club Hacken were put through their paces. It was a recovery day for those who did play.

    The ugly duckling
    Ryan Johnston

The signing of Adrian Serioux officially makes Toronto FC the ugly duckling that went away for the summer only to return in September as the hottest girl in the school.
Think about it: no one wanted a date with TFC in its sophomore year. Joao Pinto made eyes but stood her up. Brian McBride only had eyes for his first love, Chicago. Before the wounds could heal Daren Huckerby wined and dined before ducking out early on the arm of a younger California girl.

    Under-20 roster highlights a catch-22
    by Ben Rycroft

Perhaps it’s a no win situation. This week, the Canadian Soccer Association announced its roster for the run up to the Under 20 World Cup in Egypt this fall.
Either by design or by default, players professionally trained in Canada will represent half of this year’s roster — a trend starkly different in years past, when players with a European pedigree were given the nod.
It’s a testament to the growing soccer infrastructure here as clubs like Toronto FC, the Montreal Impact and the Vancouver Whitecaps are having an ever-growing influence on developing talent.

Rough workout for Toronto FC in Sunrise
BY ADAM H. BEASLEY , Miami Herald

Late in the morning after Toronto FC's exhibition win against the Swedish club BK Hacken, the half of the Reds' roster that got the previous day off probably wished it hadn't.
TFC coach John Carver splits up his team during the preseason, and those who work one day rehab the next.
The 16 players who practiced at the Sunrise Holiday Inn on Tuesday morning will certainly feel it Wednesday.

During a rugged 90-minute session, Carver put the group through the ultimate conditioning workout: eight minutes of nonstop seven-on-seven scrimmaging, where nearly anything -- including goals, kicks out of bounds, salty language and even body-slams -- failed to stop the action.

That's a Serioux amount of news today... Mo has been doing some Serioux business, and has Seriouxsly made the fans happy. I hope the team are Serioux when they say they are striving for the playoffs and more as the fans give Serioux support, and have shown Serioux dedication.

See writing for newspapers is easy - Good news anyway...

Very nice story in the Miami Herald.

The Herald (both its English and Spanish editions) covers soccer very seriously, not that this is interesting to the endless stream of people on here who just insist on shouting that they "know" that Miami can't/won't support an MLS team.

High quality interview with Juan Carlos Osorio. Even though they're shite, it deals with a number of MLS issues...the elimination of the reserves, the problem trying to get European players to come in....

    Love this quote from Carver:

"Word of mouth speaks volumes, you know," John Carver told me last week when I first asked him about the new-found ability to sign players. "I know for a fact that players talk to each other and when they see what we have and what we have got then they want to come here."

What 'they' have here is a solid plan with a commitment to winning in an environment that I have seen first-hand is conducive to producing quality players.

"I know players that have left the club and have gone to other clubs realize what they had when they were here," Carver said. "And they miss it."

At the 11th hour, the Montreal Impact have been given the green light to play at Olympic Stadium on Wednesday when they host Mexican soccer club Santos Laguna in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final (CBC Bold, CBCSports.ca, 8 p.m. ET).
The team needed final approval from the Olympic Installations Board, a governmental agency that oversees day-to-day operations of the stadium, by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
"The match will take place as planned. Everything looks fine and it's full steam ahead," Sylvie Bastien, an official with Olympic Installations Board, told CBCSports.ca.

MONTREAL — Nevio Pizzolitto didn't sleep well this week as the notion sunk in that the Montreal Impact was finally getting its chance to shine.
With veteran midfielder Mauro Biello out because of a shoulder injury, Pizzolitto will be team captain when the Impact play host to Santos Laguna of Mexico on Wednesday night.
The CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final game is expected to be played in front of more than 50,000 people at Olympic Stadium.
A throng that large for club soccer, in Montreal or anywhere in Canada, has not been seen since the heyday of the defunct North American Soccer League in the early 1980s, especially in the middle of winter.

MONTREAL — A record crowd in excess of 50,000 is expected to see the Montreal Impact face Club Santos Laguna of the Mexican premier division in the first game of a CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final Wednesday night at Olympic Stadium.

    IMPACT TO FILL BIG O
The Montreal Impact's CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final game against Santos Laguna of Mexico tonight is expected to be played in front of more than 50,000 people at Olympic Stadium.
Team president Joey Saputo said that while there were no giveaways, local and regional soccer leagues and school teams were enticed to buy $10 tickets. The best seats go for $25 or $35, with another 300 premium seats at $50 each.
"The tickets just sold," said Saputo. "Montreal is an event city and we built this as an event -- soccer in the middle of the wintertime."
It is the first leg of a two-game, total-goals series. The second leg is set for March 5.
    http://www.torontosun.com/sports/soc...21796-sun.html

In their first match of the year, the Dynamo came away with a mixed bag.
On one end, the Dynamo, who are barely into their fourth week of preseason, held their own against a Mexican First Division club seven matches into its regular season, playing the Atlante Potros to a 1-1 tie Tuesday night before 10,203 at Robertson Stadium.
But what will sting the Dynamo most is knowing they came within eight minutes of winning the opener of their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series.
It will sting because home wins in these types of tournaments are as good as gold and because they will travel to Cancun for the decisive leg of their home-and-home, aggregate-scoring series March 3 with nary an advantage and little room for error.
“It was disappointing to give the goal away late,” Dynamo midfielder Stuart Holden said.

Given that Serioux was recovering from a broken leg at the time, and Ronnie O is a better player, I'd have traded Serioux for O'Brien too.

now, with hindsight and all that, maybe you'd make a different call. but I don't like revisionist history

Really? Do you happen to remember the first season, at all? Do you remember the goal drought? Do you remember the fact that the team was completely different with Ronnie O on the pitch? We couldn't score, at all. How would adding a defender with a broken leg have addressed that?

Yes, it sucked that Ronnie O (with no history of injury) decided to be stupid and injure his knee in pre-season. That wasn't something that Mo could have predicted. Frankly, if I had to make the same decision as Mo did, with the same information, I would have done the same thing.

That being said, it makes complete sense to grab Serioux now, and I think he makes our team much better.

Sorry but if you've just learned this, it doesn't exactly make it look like your opinion is based on deep thinking or knowledge.

As Canada’s sole first division professional football club, TFC has been a disappointment to some fans north of the border the in its first two seasons due to a lack of commitment to promote Canadian players.

Rough workout for Toronto FC in Sunrise

In what Carver calls the best draft he's ever seen, TFC selected Wake Forest's Sam Cronin with the second pick overall, O'Brian White of Jamaica at No. 4 and Cal goalie Stefan Frei with the 13th selection.
how many drafts has Carver ever seen???
