That was my thought too when I listened to the interview.

As far as I know there are performance metrics (mins played, goals scored, international caps) than can accelerate a players graduation from the program.

His GA status expired before he was traded to TFC. He's more than likely in the 1-20 roster spots and counting on the cap.
