considering how Mexicans teams have dominated at home and MLS teams look scared quite a few moments during the games, I don't think the intimidation factor is quite gone yet

Liga MX chose not to participate in 2017 Copa Libertadores and no to 2018 edition also. Key reason Liga MX gave was that the new longer schedule was not good for Liga MX.
To prep for CCL, do what IMFC did for their run to CCL final. Train in Mexico for most of the preseason and friendly games vs Mexican 2nd div teams.
