Ottawa battle lines drawn

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20090214.CFLOTTAWA14/TPStory/Sports

The battle between sides backing CFL and Major League Soccer interests in Ottawa is taking on the dynamics of a political campaign.
The City of Ottawa has been asked to consider two stadium proposals from competing sides: One is led by Ottawa 67's junior hockey team owner Jeff Hunt and proposes downtown Lansdowne Park be redeveloped for a CFL expansion franchise; the other is led by Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, who is pushing for a soccer-specific stadium to be built in the suburb of Kanata, next to the Sens' home arena, Scotiabank Place.
Melnyk caused a stir this week, with comments suggesting Canadian football is a sport in deep decline, while professional soccer represents the future in this country.

"If I was willing to make my bet - and I'm making a $50-million bet myself personally on this - what will be around 25 years from now?" Melnyk was quoted as saying in an Ottawa newspaper. "Will it be soccer or will it be CFL football? I'll lay my money on soccer."

Goal.Commentary: The Value Of Beckham

Now that the Los Angeles Galaxy have indicated their intention to keep David Beckham with the club, it's worth a look back at his tenure with the team and the league to decide if that choice is well-founded. Who better than Goal.com's Major League Soccer contributors to speak on David Beckham's impact on the U.S. league?

Was the Beckham experiment worth it?

2. Should Major League Soccer have let him go?

3. What has been most memorable about Beckham's stint thus far in MLS?

Interesting reaction to Beckham.

Good to see a slutty 18 year old as SSG. :yum:

I doubt there will be another Beckham effect. The circumstances were too perfect. Former Englad captain, a bit out of form, a high profile (but skanky) wife, model good looks for the soccer mom's, off-field personality fit for the N.American market.

Is it safe to safe to say there will not be another Beckham for a long long time?

I think his effect was a positive one for the league.

Will a jaded Beckham be bad for the league? I doubt it, he's a consumate professional, seems like he's good to his word. Tough situation for MLS.

I, like others, were waiting for the floodgate of high profile DPs to make their way into the league. Zidane, Henry, Ronaldinho... too bad it never happened.

"Beckham will be remembered for the thrilling, late August game against New York Red Bulls that drew nearly 70,000 people to Giants stadium. Even before the final whistle, the game felt more symbolic than surreal. MLS is followed by the shadow named potential, and that night, we all saw the leauge's not-so-distant future."

we're getting close to the tipping point, for sure.

Though I think LA should have sold him, I don't think Beckham will do the sulk when he gets back, he's way too much of a professional for that. That game against NYRB was truly epic, it was fun to watch. I wish I could find it in its entirety. Anyone know where?

Second place? That would be Toronto FC, at $44 million. They can thank the Beckham windfall for their current financial standing.

cuz you know it was this and this alone.

MLS and LA had a chance to cash out on the Beckham deal as big winners. With a $10m transfer they would have come close to recouping all the money invested but still retain the profits of increased ticket sales and the profits from jerseys over the last two years. The benefits of increased profile and legitimacy the american game have achieved could be erased if Beckham is expected to return for year to a team where he clearly doesn't want to be only to walk on a free transfer at the end of the year. Not to mention that LA could possibly field a more competitive team without him

Ancelotti optimistic about Beckham

CARNAGO, Italy (AP)—AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti remains hopeful to sign David Beckham on a permanent contract, despite the Los Angeles Galaxy (http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/teams/los/;_ylt=At9Ph_0MhBDNiz3eDk20pmsUwLYF) ruling out further talk about a deal.
“We’ve still got 20 days to close the deal. Galaxy has forced the situation, but there’s time before March 9,” Ancelotti told the ANSA news agency Saturday. “My wish is that he can play in other derbies.”

Just curious because I honestly don't know... but who in the MLS is in need of a developing GK?

For you, this may have meen the motivating factor to buy, but for most it was not. The South End was sold out 3 or 4 weeks before Beckham signed, and sales in the rest of the stadium were steady. I bought in Jan, and the best seat I could get was 5th row, 17 seats from the aisle, in the second most expensive section.

but there was a documented jump in sales after Beckham signed. I remember Tom Anselmi being quoted around the time, saying the Beckham signing gave an extra push for sales.. phones started ringing off the hook.

It was probably not so much to see Beckham (since it's just 1 game of the 15) but the notoriety was free advertising for TFC.
