Reds beat U.S. U20s
Barrett scores in 2-1 win in Florida

Toronto FC beat the U.S. Under 20s 2-1 in a preseason game in Bradenton, Fla. on Sunday afternoon. It was the Reds first competitive game of preseason.

I likey...

Four trialists played in the game, and Scottish midfielder Michael McGlinchey scored Toronto's second goal with twenty minutes left to play when he headed in a cross from Sam Cronin.

Something we haven't really had since the O'Brien/Dichio connection.

Following the internets... on Kenton this article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/cheltenham_town/7813141.stm) seems to say he left his UK club rather unexpectedly because "he had another offer"... hmm

Former Leicester and Leeds man Kenton arrived at Cheltenham as a free agent in October, signing a three-month contract which expired on 3 January.
Allen explained he was expecting Kenton to sign a long-term deal at Whaddon Road and is disappointed to have lost the 30-year-old.
"Darren accepted the contract offer that we made to him, he was set to sign for us," said Allen.
"But he had another offer over the weekend, we don't know where from, and Darren's chosen now to pursue other interests. "That's life, we'll adapt and adjust, we certainly won't lose any sleep over it and in comes the next person to do their stuff," he added.

Also, take note that this game was played after TFC training session so I'm sure these boys were a bit tired going into the game. 2-1 is a good result in this circumstance, along with using trialists.

We are all missing one big piece of discussion here....Chad Barrett, despite having a training session beforehand, managed to play 75 minutes in the Florida heat without any cramping. Chalk up one positive story already.
Also, Cronin in on the action already makes me quite happy.

OK footie sleuthers, we need answers!

Who is Manacho? Only reference I could find suggested he might be from Mozambique. But it was in Portugese and mine is very poor.

Who is Richardson? It's not Kieran Richardson. If Sunderland isn't selling him to Newcastle or Bolton, we sure can't afford him.

What's the deal with McGlinchey? Is it a loan? Age and prior experience would suggest so, but he's also at that point (and with a history of injuries) where Celtic tends to cut losses.

Is Darren Kenton a defensive solution, given that he's only 5'9 and a utility player (mostly defense but also used as a holding mid?) Lots of top-level experience.

The 15 minutes from Frei is disconcerting. Injury?

Lots of questions.

"AMONG the new raft of rules issued by Fifa is that any player whipping out a mask from his sock to wear while celebrating scoring will be yellow-carded.
The first victim of this regulation was Bolivian striker Pablo Salinas, who was sent off after firing in the second goal in The Strongest’s 2-0 win over Bolivar.
To mark The Strongest’s first win over their bitter La Paz rivals in 10 years, Salinas pulled on a Spiderman mask.

Everything I've read on pablo salinas from Bolivia says he is a striker. I'm just not sure if I'm reading about the guy who actually is on trial. Where are you getting that he is a midfielder? the fact he came on for dero?

i wouldn't read too much into Frei coming off at 15'.

It seems more than just a coincidence that the game was divided into 30, 15, 15, and 30 minute portions and he came off exactly at the 15' mark. I bet it was something to do with training for Sutts.

Chased by a host of Britain's top clubs, McGlinchey opted to join Celtic and made his SPL debut as a teenager in December 2005. Comfortable in midfield and attack, Michael has a bright future ahead of him. He also played a key role in Scotland Under-19s' run to the 2006 European Championships final and featured for Scotland at the 2007 Under-20 World Cup.

Straight from the horse's mouth:
Some guys played longer than others as we had Tyrone & Amado away on international duty and a few minor injuries in the squad.

I agree, its not that hard to convert a foward to left mid or right mid, he has the speed, the skill, so i dont see why he wouldnt be a good sign.
Out of the trialist right now i personally would want to sign Richardson, and Kenton.

Kenton being experienced CB, and Richardson being a very quick, and skillful

McGlinchy has become a winger in recent years (from reading blogs). I think this is the type of player MLS should go after if he comes at a reasonable price. Vitti, McGlinchy, Ricketts are all the same mold. "Phizzled" phenoms, but really its the system that let them down. When you don't play, you don't improve and you lose confidence. Imagine regular playing time for these guys and what could happen. Their self confidence could get lit again.

yes. these kinds of players find themselves in situations caused by an excess of talent in Europe. They are decent players but they lose out to the numbers game. They may also end up getting locked into a contract and some coach doesn't like them for personal reasons, and they get glued to the bench. Sometimes it's just opportunity. Imagine if DeRo had been glued to a European bench for years instead of playing for San Jose.. he wouldn't be the same player he is now.
