View Full Version : Beckham has been asked to stay in Milan

trane

I heard the tail end but apparantly he has been asked, and he has approached the agent. I will check the Italian papers for more info. Gattuso is out for most of the season, so there is space for him.

Yes, he just got drafted, anyways the Italian papers confirm that he is in talks with Galaxy to get a deal to stay with Milan.

Milan has offered 4.5 million pounds as a transfer fee

trane
01-27-2009, 09:46 AM
I just saw that. It is hard to imagine how LA will be able to keep him at this point. It will only come down to a price. LA will make some good money in the deal.

Strangely enough, it will help the team overall by clearing cap space so that Bruce Arena can totally rebuild the team (it's half-rebuilt already).

^ I agree, I think that LA can truly grow. Their problem is the marketing, but it is a problem that they created, to a point, by trying to market a "star" and not the game.

That what, a little under 6.5 million US dollars?

I would have assumed the would offer more than that for a transfer fee.

Or maybe it's just the first step in a negotiation.

rocker

and Arena would get a shitload of allocation money in this transfer. That's very valuable in MLS.

Come on you guys, admit it when Beckham was here at the All-Star Game he was on form and put on a show, by the way Milan is the Fashion Mecca, so it is an interesting development for the Beckham's.
And yes the Galaxy could re-build and acquire a shit load of cash.

While I think having Beckham here is good for the league, I also thinking making a good sale to Milan is beneficial too.

He has a clause to leave for free in October so getting 4.5m for him would be a steal. Let him go.

If they do not negotiate a happy price both for ac milan and the mlse then rest assured this will be the last season for beckham in L.A
Once the season is over he's free to leave his contract and forget about a transfer fee..

I think its just the beginning of the negotiation however the mlse should not get too too greedy or eigtherwise they will miss out ..

ON a side note i love the exposure these negotiations will give mls... I just hope that when its all said and done..Beckham don't turn around and start talking shite about the teams and the league...

I don't know how people think that this is good for the league. The preception of the MLS was that it was a shit league. The league did everything that it could to change that preception by telling everyone who would listen that this was a league that wasgood enough for David Beckham. Now Becks has turned his back on the league, and no amount of positive spin will do anything to change the preception that this is a shit league.

This move effectively kills the chances of any team signing an in-form DP.

Do you really think the chances of signing on inform DP were good? The league is shit....it's not some big secret. The quality is not the greatest but more importantly it's run like a fucking pub league. I'll bet my left nut part of the reason for him wanting to get gone is because of having to miss games for his club to play for England! He called the league out on this in numerous interviews!

good for the league. This trade re enforces what many of us knew already. That America over rates itself. MLS is no different. They thought the draw of a big US city would be enough and it was for a time. It will be enough for some other guy too.

Cretan you knew Becks wasn't here for the way he played but who he brought through the gates. All of those people aren't going away now GB is gone.

IMO he did the league a service and I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

I wouldn't say the odds for signing an inform DP were 'good' but as Beckham proved, it was possible. The chances for new top signings increase with the number of Beckhams in the league.

I don't disagree with your view of the league, but bringing in Beckham was supposed to help change that perception. Instead, it's just confirmed & advertised those negatives to the world.

While this may be true, it doesn't bode well for the future of the league.

Cretan you knew Becks wasn't here for the way he played but who he brought through the gates. All of those people aren't going away now GB is gone.

I don't think that anyone would argue that Becks was among the league's best players while he was here, but obviously that $250 million deal wasn't for his on the pitch proformance. He was brought in to generate interest, sell tickets, sell shirts and be used as a marketting tool for the league. The over-all purposed of which was to advertise the league to the world and to help sell the league as a first rate league (the fact that it's FAR from a first rate league is besides the point). In the end, he's advertised the poor quality of the league and re-enforced the negative view of the league that existed before he came.

As for what effect his absense will have on future ticket sales...who knows? I hope anyone who came to see the spectical of Beckham grew to love the game and are here for the long haul. I kinda doubt the truth of that, but I hope that it's true. At the very least it's hard to imagine the Galaxy's season ticket base and fan turn out not shrinking.

IF garber is smart.... he would MILk AC Milan...
I would ask for a lot of money like 15 million (if not more) in transfer since a lot of money is going to be lost around the league due his absence. You know how many jersey sales will they lose? and attendences. not that i liked it but everytime LA played in a city beside Toronto it would pretty much sell out... even against.. DEaDBULLS... what was it 50k was the attendance at giant stadium?

I donno There are 3 problems here. 1) Becks wants to stay at Milan, and who can blame him. He;s a starter and he will be called up by england. which is what he wants. SO it;s not in the MLS best interest to go against that.

2) profile of the league goes up because shows that a becks move to MLS wasn;t all because he was useless in europe.

3)MLS will LOSE TONS of money because of this... Jersey sales, Marketing Deals, and most importantly Attendance. atleast on those special days when a team played against Galaxy.

Solutions:
1) Sell him for a sum that would compensate for the loss...
2)Extend the loan....
3) Ask for SHEVA in return!!! He;s not playing anyways...

He's also beginning to say not so positive things about the league. Sell him if he wants to go, and hopefully he won't un-do everything good he's done by telling players to avoid the MLS like a plague.

I'll crib what was said on World Soccer Daily yesterday: Beckham's draw at the gate is subject to diminishing returns. This year the Beckham games, if they were to happen, probably would not have a signficantly higher attendance than regular league games.

The thing I'm trying to understand with Becks is... what is his motivation one way or the other?
When he came to LA he said that he wanted to make the move while he is still in good form,
and that he wasn't just going to MLS as a form of retirement.
But now suddenly he wants to play in Milan?
Why is that? What is different?
If he wanted to play for a good European club he could have done so instead of going to MLS.
The only reason I can think of is that he realised he does not like MLS and/or LA. (or he can't stand his wife).
But the fact is, he new MLS was not a high-end league. It was his plan to improve soccer culture in America.
So does this mean he is a quitter? It wasn't as easy to market the game in USA as he thought so he is bailing?
Or MLS is so crappy that he can't take it anymore and needs to get the hell out?

Whatever the case, it doesn't make MLS look very good.
I know I know... you can't blame the guy for wanting to play in the Big Time!
But that's a side issue... he stated certain intentions when he came here, and now he is possibly backing out.
Perhaps he really didn't want to go to LA in the first place and he was talked into it by Posh and her promotional entourage?
Perhaps this move to Milan is what he wanted all along...

Boondaddy
01-30-2009, 04:24 PM
His motivation is the World Cup in 2010. His chances of getting there are much higher if Capello watches him score goals for Milan rather than scoring goals for LA....it's that simple.

Jeffro

Beckham has set up 2 goals today for Milan, both were put on plates, one for Pato, one for Ambrosini. I'm not a Beckham fan, but he's playing really well
