How are cities awarded the draft? Can current MLS cities get the draft?
Do you think Toronto would ever get the draft?

From what i understand its not really that great of an honour to get the draft, they just have it wherever they can

having the draft in Toronto would be cool.. but it might be too intense for MLS.
There'd be so many chants against every other team .. lots of booing of everyone except the TFC picks... wait, that sounds like the NBA draft in New York!

They hold it in conjunction with some large annual US soccer conference - unlikely ever to be held in Toronto.

They should do the draft at Shoeless Joe's

Drafts are pretty bad entertainment in my opinion.

I think it would be a blast to go down there and boo every team that comes up. It would be a great practice session for us to do some TFC chants.

Other American conferences have been held in Toronto, though, (American Library Association, for example) so maybe one year the whole thing will be held here.

I went to the NHL darft in 07. I was in Dayton the night before and decided to catch the 2nd day in Columbus. It was boring as hell outside of when the Sabres picked because there were a few other Sabres fans there too. We also booed the Leafs pretty good. Also managed to yell at Darcey Regier to keep Drury and Briere. Apparently, someone doesn't listen to their fan base.

I can't imagine the MLS draft being the much better besides the fans turning it into a giant spectacle.

if they held it at Ricoh Coliseum I bet a 1000 TFC fans would show up and turn it into chaos. Garber already looked a little pissed at the previous drafts when the small groups of supporters were chanting. hahaha. it would be fun.

Exactly...and that's where the fun begins!!! especially TFC fans...we'd probably all get pissed up and cause some real chaos in there.

I can just imagine Garber at the draft in toronto: "QUIET PLEASE, QUIET! WILL YOU PLEASE STOP SINGING YOUR GODDAMN DRUNKEN SONGS AND LET ME ANNOUNCE THE NEXT PICK! WE WILL NOT CONTINUE UNLESS YOU STOP SINGING AND GIVING ME THE FINGER!"

:jaw:Glad to see you made it back...alive.
Seriously though. Drafts are okay (I guess) you are able to see the players up close and personal and there are things going on around the city in conjuction with the draft, but that's for the NFL, NBA, and the NHL. The MLS draft is a side bar to the College coaches convention so it's more of a trade show than an actual MLS Draft.
It is neat, though, to go to the trade show and see all the neat gear that Puma, Adidas, Umbro, and a few others.

those dates are for the convention right? but if MLS decides to split the draft from the convention, it could go elsewhere.

I don't think the MLS will split with the convention for quite awhile. It's very cost effective to have it all at once plus it's pretty much the only US Soccer convention where everyone is involved from college coaches to supplier vendors to the USL, NPSL, MLS, and now the WPS.
Not to mention that in 2010 the thing is in Philly which should be HUGE since that's when the Philly club comes on board.
If anything I could see this becoming bigger as the MLS and USL grows and soccer becomes more main stream.

back in 2003, we couldn't get access to the draft, it was in KC and there was no tv coverage

2004 was Charlotte, Freddy went #1, 41 people were watching. 1st year that Fox provided coverage

keeps getting bigger and better.

MLS/NSCAA/Fox have three more years to go. Keeps getting bigger and better. NSCAA is a captive audience, the convention is huge, and its not just for coaches anymore. Where is MLS going to get better exposure if they went to a stand alone event.

i heard attendance at Baltimore last year exceeded 100,000 paid admissions over the course of three days for the exhibit hall (soccer related suppliers). NCAA also rely on the event for key meetings; schools use it for new hires and recruiting meetings

super Y and USL are there too
i don't see a split, too much exposure at risk.

FWIW,
Toronto was on the short list to host a future convention.
the NSCAA committee commented that the bid package was exceptional but the committee's visit to Toronto was cancelled due to the SARs outbreak. and there was also the Toronto/Canada thing, would NSCAA memebers travel to T-Oh????

From what I hear, the people who put the package in play are back at it for the convention in 2016 or 2017. the presance of TFC will only enhance the bid package.
