Canadian Press just reported that Canadian international and former Toronto Lynx bicycle-kick specialist Paul Stalteri has just been released by Tott’n’m ‘Otspur.
Apparently the parting is mutual, as the 31-year-old fullback wants to seek new opportunities with other clubs.
TFC Designated Player conspiracists will now insist that Stalteri is clear to Toronto as a high-priced DP.
I think … not.

It has been 10 days since Dwayne De Rosario was traded to Toronto FC and there has been no news conference to unveil its biggest player transaction. Amid speculation that something's gone awry, it's time to take a collective breath and chill out -- De Rosario still is coming.
The delay has to do with TFC's need to juggle salaries in order to fit De Rosario into the payroll without using the Designated Player spot on him.
More moves are on the way to clear cap space.

Good. Don't get me wrong, I like him (most of the time) but he has been pretty vocal against the turf, and since he'd probably be looking for DP (or max non DP, either way) money, he isn't worth it right now for TFC.

I still think he has some good years still left in him, and with Marvell potentially leaving at some point in the future...he might fit the bill.....I agree though I would not want to pay him DP or max salary.....but he has signed in Germany..as far as i know...so not an issue...

I would rather spend that on a central defender...but that's just me! :)

This might be holiday optimism, but I say never close the door. By the time Stalteri is ready to come to Toronto, years from now, may the salary constraints and the turf both be lifted !

Since when has soccer been more American? Multi-million dollar contracts, league suspensions, banning fans from coming to matches indefinitely following racially charged insults, and steroids scandals. Does it get any more American than that?

With headlines that rival other major American sports leagues. The MLS and soccer seem to have made it into the American sports vernacular.

International sports media company, MP & Silva, signed a long-term, broad partnership with Major League Soccer (MLS), North America’s top-flight professional soccer league.
As part of the agreement, MP & Silva acquires the exclusive television rights for Major League Soccer outside North America through the 2013 season. The deal includes the exclusive rights to all MLS games, tournaments and events, including MLS regular season, MLS Cup Playoffs, MLS Cup, and the international competitions SuperLiga, InterLiga and Pan-Pacific Championship.
“This is an important partnership for Major League Soccer and all of our clubs and we are pleased to cement a long-term strategic partnership with MP & Silva,” said Doug Quinn, president of Soccer United Marketing, Major League Soccer’s marketing arm.

Hard to believe these rights are worth anything. This could easily be a revenue-sharing deal (ie what the NHL has with NBC)....where MLS won't get much, if anything.

By the way, Canada got a mention in a story about potential WC2018 bids. Nothing really in there, the story was about England's bid.

Furthermore, our increased television rights revenues will help to ensure long-term growth for MLS.”

They're worth something (maybe not much, but something)! However, I'd imagine this is more of a long-term deal.

Says elsewhere it's worth 8 figures.

You're probably right, I'm probably wrong. But the league tends to exaggerate this stuff. The Beckham "$250 million contract" was on inspection a $32.5 million contract with some contingent payments for marketing rights.
