Associated Press
ZURICH, Switzerland–European champion Spain has finished the year in style – atop FIFA's world soccer rankings.
But Canada dropped nine spots to No. 90, its lowest ranking since May 2007, in the list released Wednesday. A year ago, the Canadians ranked 55th.
Spain won all 16 of its matches in 2008 – including the penalty shootout victory over Italy in a European Championship quarter-final – after starting the year ranked No. 4. It has been top for six straight months since winning Euro 2008 in June.

Now we know what Houston's cap dump was for:

Less than a week after trading away one of their marquee players, the Dynamo are in talks with representatives of Mexican First Division striker Luis Angel Landin and his club about a move to MLS.
Landin, 23, a member of Morelia Monarcas since mid -2007, first caught Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear’s eye during the 2007 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup while playing for Pachuca.
The Dynamo are keeping quiet about the state of negotiations but did confirm an interest in the Zamora, Michoacan native.
“It’s hard for us to comment on players who are currently under contract by another team, so we can’t address the specific discussions that we’ve had with his representation or club,” Dynamo chief operating officer Chris Canetti said.
Landin, (5-11, 160), is considered a rising talent in Mexico.

Lots of news about a certain English player:

However, newspaper La Repubblica reports today that the Via Turati powers-that-be are looking into the possibility of signing Golden Balls until 2010.
Apparently, there is a clause in the former Manchester United ace’s deal with the Los Angeles outfit that would allow him to unilaterally rescind it and his lawyers are prepared to activate it, should he opt to remain at Milanello to further increase his chances of earning a call-up to the national side for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Beckham-mania is about to strike in Italy. By the end of the year, the world's most hyped footballer will have teamed up with AC Milan on a three-month loan from his MLS club, the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Given Milan's impressive and long-established ability to combine image, marketing and good soccer, a link-up with David Beckham hardly comes as a total surprise. Indeed, a couple of seasons back, when he was at the height of his footballing powers, such a move was often touted.

LONDON (AP) — Police say no charges will be filed after they investigated allegations of theft from David and Victoria Beckham's British mansion.
Three people, two of whom had worked for the celebrity couple as housekeepers, were arrested in October. British media reported that the arrests came after some of the couple's possessions — soccer memorabilia and dresses — were spotted on an Internet auction site.

Another example of shoddy sports journalism, this time from SI online. By simply aggregating information already published online from 3 different sources, you too can recycle old news and claim it to be fresh and new.

Carl Robinson announced in his column in Welsh newspaper Country Times that he has agreed to a new deal with Toronto FC. The Welsh midfielder stated that he has not yet signed the deal, but that he and Toronto general manager Mo Johnston have verbally agreed to Robinson's return.
