Juan Carlos Osorio revealed that it is his preference that NYRB only have one designated player and that the second DP slot would be better served on acquiring multiple players.

It depends what it will take. If it takes the 2nd or 4th overall pick, plus the 13th pick. It may be a good idea if we can get a player who can make a difference the next few years.

How about we work on securing ONE DP before even talking about acquiring the spot for another.

I was just to post something along the same lines. But I was going to ask, when did we sign our first DP?

What is different between the LA situation and our situation is the allocation cash that can be used. With over a million dollars in allocation money, that equates to around 3 quality MLS players.

What could be done is you get your 1 top DP, and then get a 2nd-tier DP who earns significantly less.

1 DP slot : Top DP - $400K counts towards the cap
2 DP slot : a DP earning $650K ($250K towards the cap, and $400K from allocation)

^ What is also differetn between LA and us, is that they have two DPs we have ....none. So far at least.

LA never had two DPs. There's Beckham while both Donovan and Ruiz were grandfathered.

But to answer the question, no, we should stick to one DP.

It may be helpful at this time to point out I voted NO. And, while creating this post I also created the rationale behind the yes and no answers.

But, nevertheless, the title should read "Trade for a 2nd DP spot from NY"...which doesn't mean we acquired any more than the ability to sign a second DP. Thats for the people who didn't bother to read the damn article.

When did we acquire a DP spot....since we entered the league.

I think with the amount of allocation we have, one could support a good case for two QUALITY DPs. Also, with the league potentially expanding the salary cap in the next few years, why not try and utilize the DP rule to our advantage.

Hell we could trade one or two draft picks for even more allocation.

I the DP only goes till the end of this season then goes back to Chivas or wherever Guevara was supposed to go

i'm curious to see what happens to the DP thang.
cuz 2009 was the last season for this roster spot, and then the league was gonna assess it. And the CBA ends after this coming season, so the whole roster environment could change soon.

My thought exactly. We could have a dozen DP spots available - it's meaningless unless you actually use them.

You're getting a head of yourself.

EDIT: But that is typical for this board. :p

A second DP is the sort of idea I like to see tossed by the board (not you guys - the MLSE board, I mean), but I agree that it could be a double-edged sword. In principle it's a step in the right direction, but complications arising from the loss of cap space could be problematic. Of course, a loss of talent throughout the roster as a whole might be offset by what the DPs can bring to the field, which is why I'm adamant that they have to be of extremely good quality.

You see; we need the DPs to not only justify their initial expense, but to also offset the loss of other good players on the roster that we had to drop to make room for them.

If we had a higher cap to work with it really wouldn't be a problem. Things get tricky when you only have $2.3 million with which to work with. Personally, I think its a plan we should take a risk at and go for the two DPs. After all, fortune do tend to look favourable upon those with bold initiatives.

Why does everyone associate the term DP with a player like David Beckham or Thierry Henry or some sort of mega-marketing player idol to sell jerseys and be in commercials and be a symbol for the team?

How about just signing some good footballers?

If they're called DPs and if there's 2 of them, then so be it.

Before we even think about getting two DP's we should be more worried about getting the right player for our first DP!! That is priority number one.

Yeah it would be nice to hold 2 empty DP slots for a season, you know ust so we have even more to complain about.

This is what we have so far, it includes some assumptions. We have $1,000,000 in allocation money that will expire probably after this year.

1. Sutton $ 158,000.00
2. Edwards $ 44,750.00
3. Wynne $ 150,000.00
4. Nana $ 36,000.00 (senior contract)
5. Velez $ 60,500.00
6. Marshall $ 153,750.00
7. James $ 44,750.00
8. Dunivant $ 105,000.00
9. Brennan $ 183,250.00
10. Harmse $ 72,000.00
11. Robinson $ 330,000.00 (assuming same money - heard less tho)
12. Roselund $ 36,000.00
13. Guevara $ 185,750.00
14. Ricketts $ 213,000.00 (assuming same money)
15. Smith $ 91,000.00 (pro-rated maybe)
16. Dichio $ 165,625.00 (assuming same money)
17. Barrett $ 91,000.00 (new contract - estimation)

Total $ 2,120,375

Ibbe does not count towards the cap

The interesting question that I have, is if allocation money can be used to knock down the price of a DP under the cap. To me, it wouldn't make much sense if it could, since it's supposed to knock down their actual wage. So if you sign a DP for 750k a year, to bring their cost down to 300k against the cap, would you have to use 450k allocation, or only 100k (down from 400k)?

There should be a third option for "Maybe - Depending on the circumstances".

If our team can be significantly assisted by bringing on another $350,000+ player, and we have the cap space, then go for it.
