Politicians, executives, and fans gathered Monday to witness the official ground-breaking for a stadium that will house the Philadelphia MLS franchise starting in 2010. League commissioner Don Garber and lead investor Jay Sugarman wielded shovels for a photo opportunity that followed about a month of actual work, once site preparation had been completed, in Chester, Pa.

The centerpiece for a $500 million residential/retail/entertainment project is a 18,634-capacity stadium at the foot of the Commodore Barry Bridge less than 15 miles from downtown Philadelphia and accessible by an interstate freeway as well as public transit.

The Sons of Ben took place in a celebration that started before dawn and continued well past the ceremonial turning of the first shovels of dirt. The day started with a breakfast tailgate with members cooking up eggs, sausage, and pancakes. Chester’s own Phatso’s Bakery supplied donuts, sticky buns, and a Sons of Ben sheet cake. Fox29 taped scenes from the event and did a live interview.

That's not downtown, it's 15 miles---30 kms from downtown in a decrepit suburb.

30kms?

thats like mississauga.....

but its along public transit, So its not so bad.

Crappy part is that its in a dead land suburb (which is not like missisauga at all)

BMO should be at DOWNSVIEW PARK

why? downsview is shitty. a ghost-town, next to a crap highway smothered in traffic... difficult to access except by car for non-Torontonians.

Blasphemer!

Lots of people care where their stadium is. It's a very big deal indeed.

And I think BMO is perfectly situated.

What he said.

Downsview subway station just across the street,401/Allen Rd. around the corner, enough space for real training facility with at least 10 real grass soccer fields.(2 turf fields and 1 grass field already in place).
One day if TFC want to get their own stadium this is only place they can go.
Looking from TFC practice and soccer development side, much better solution, for go train commuters probably not,TTC commuters no big deal like I said Downsview station right there. For me 10-15 minutes walk. :D

MLS celebrates major achievement by a special supporter

Major league soccer wishes to acknowledge the 34th birthday of it most cherished supporter, Flatpicker. "He embodies all the attributes that make a great fan in this league and is an example for all other supporters to follow," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. Garber also stated that he wishes to hold talks with Flatpicker with the hope of gaining keen insight into how the league should be run. "He really knows his stuff. I think I can see Flatpicker pulling the strings around here soon, with me acting as more of a figurehead for the league. It's no secret that I am losing touch with reality, and I think Mr. Picker will guide me in the right direction."

much better solution, for go train commuters probably not,

have you seen how many people commute by the GO? it's massive.
you'd be hurting the team's huge Oakville/Burlington pop by going up to Downsview.
no need to promote the car culture for no reason.

I find it strange that people are always calling for downtown stadiums on this site, and then somebody suggests Downsview and some people actually think that's a good idea for the team. Downsview is further from downtown Toronto than Colorado's stadium is from downtown Denver.

CNE is the perfect spot. Torontonians can get there by TTC, sububanites can easily get there by GO. It's in the perfect location to watch a game.
The other stuff (practice fields) doesn't make the location better for the majority of fans. I won't be up there practicing ;)

Plus, who wants to hang out around the 401 ghetto ?? don't want massive fireballs hitting me from propane facilities ;)

I think CNE is also perfect, although it lacks bars.

they will come in time.

anything on the GO train is good with me.

now only if the GO would get better and have buses that come from area others than ones on the lakeshore line

Got friends in Philly said it was relatively close, 30 mins from where they are via subway, but its also close to a trainstation or something allowing access from DC, NY etc

Downsview park is huge. There would have been tonnes of room to build a proper TFC center.

Instead we got BMO. Dont get me wrong i love it. Buts its bare bones. WELFARE TYPE STADIUM.

HELL 64 million dollars to make?

DAMN. THATS PEANUTS
