TFC re-signs Robinson, loses Smith

Toronto FC got a huge boost for next season yesterday by signing Welsh international midfielder Carl Robinson to a new two-year Major League Soccer deal.
That was the good news.
The bad news was that the Reds lost a valuable piece off their roster when the Seattle Sounders picked off New Zealand international midfielder/forward Jarrod Smith in yesterday's MLS expansion draft.
TFC's director of soccer Mo Johnston said he was ecstatic at being able to get Robinson's name on a new contract, particularly after the 32-year-old became the object of interest by several English sides in the wake of his player of the year season in Toronto.

Toronto FC loses Smith in draft
Expansion Seattle Sounders claims New Zealand forward
Associated Press

SEATTLE — The neophyte Seattle Sounders just grew from four players to 14.
General manager Adrian Hanauer and technical director Chris Henderson emphasized defence with a mix of youth and experience in Wednesday's MLS expansion draft.
Toronto FC lost New Zealand forward Jarrod Smith, who started in six games and saw action in 20 this season, in the fourth round.
Another new Sounder is Northwest native Nate Jaqua, from Eugene, Ore. He played for the Houston Dynamo and the U.S. national team.

Jarrod Smith selected in Expansion Draft
Striker played one season for Reds

Major League Soccer held its 2008 Expansion Draft for Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday, with the team selecting 10 players that will assist them in putting together a roster for their first season of play beginning in March 2009. Among their selections was Toronto FC midfielder/forward Jarrod Smith. Smith, 24, was selected by Toronto in the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft 1st overall, but played in 2007 in his native New Zealand for Hawke's Bay United. He joined Toronto FC in March 2008 on a developmental contract and was promoted to the senior roster in June after making an impressive start to the season.

Drafting daft
Ryan Johnston

The MLS Expansion Draft might be the biggest non-event in all of sports.

Teams release individual lists of players deemed A) expendable; or B) unlikely to be taken before the anointed new franchise places a phone call to the league outlining the list of 10 selected.

Then the list is released to the masses and after a few solitary 'Who?' and 'Why?' exclamations the speculation begins all over again as to what trades the 10 players selected will inevitably occupy.

Unless the post-draft trade frenzy fails to materialize.

In 2006 Mo Johnston knowingly selected 10 players (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_MLS_Expansion_Draft) that would never see the light of day in Toronto.

"Made famous in the pages of London’s The Sun newspaper as a bare-chested Page 3 model, this 30-year-old pin-up was also featured in Eurotrip – which seems fitting, because we’d take a trip to Europe, to catch a glimpse of this British babe."

Toronto FC made him player of the year, and we did so too. I believe U-Sector chose Sutton, don't know about the other supporters.

FYI, for those interested, we will be doing a POTY scarf, probably early January.
