Montreal out of MLS expansion race
Associated Press
November 21, 2008 at 10:48 PM EST

LOS ANGELES — Montreal withdrew its bid for a Major League Soccer expansion team, commissioner Don Garber said Friday in his state-of-the-league address.
"They're out for the next round of expansion," Garber said. "I don't think it's gone forever but it's gone for now."
Other cities bidding for expansion teams are Atlanta, Miami, St. Louis, Vancouver, Ottawa and Portland, Ore. Representatives from Miami, Portland, Vancouver and Ottawa met with member of the MLS board this week, Garber said.
Seattle will join the league next year, followed by Philadelphia in 2010.

The vibes for Ottawa's Major League Soccer franchise bid are becoming increasingly strong.
Cities chasing a franchise for 2011 have piled into Los Angeles this week to meet the league's board over the next few days in their latest bids to impress the decision-makers.
Naturally, Senators Sports & Entertainment trio Eugene Melnyk, Roy Mlakar and Cyril Leeder were there oozing confidence.
I spoke with Leeder moments after the trio had made its latest presentation.
He told me it had gone extremely well, that the board was full of questions and that some members even sought him out after the presentation to ask more.
"I can't think they would have done that if they had not been very interested," he said.
I, for one, am not surprised at the interest. MLS simply loves Canadian teams.
This uncommon liking comes not only because Toronto FC has been such a stunning success and a model for how a new franchise should develop.
