Bayern borrow Landon Donavan from Galaxy

Bayern Munich are set to sign USA international Landon Donovan on a loan deal running from Jan 1 to at least the middle of March and possibly until the end of the season.

Donovan, 26, who has made over a century of caps for his country, has been training with Bayern for the last week and a half and has impressed Bayern coach Juergen Klinsmann.

"The goal will be to see if we can get him long term, at least until the end of the season," Klinsmann told the Bayern's website.

Donovan top scored in Major League Soccer's regular season with 20 goals in 25 matches for LA Galaxy team.

His loan follows that of David Beckham to AC Milan, also for three months, though in contrast Galaxy and Milan have both said that deal will end in March. Who'd have thunk it?

really?

I guess they have enough cash to take a few chances (gambles) to see if it works out. Personally, even though I dislike Donovan (understatement), I think the league is better with him in it. He gives us someone to hate, and for the american kiddies, someone who isn't Beckham to look up to. Still.... fuck that guy.

Edit:

He's been training with the senior team at Bayern for about a week or so...I haven't seen anywhere about him signing any loan deal apart from this little clip.

I suspect the fact that he is coming in fit and in end of season form probably helped him stand out. I agree that this would be a loss for the league. Outside of Beckham, there are not a lot of names that the casual fan knows.

I just can't see how he gets into the first team barring injuries or an exodus of offensive players in January. I will be the first to shut my mouth on this whole thing if he steps in and starts playing well, but right now this doesn't sit well with me.

You always overreact when it is your team!

Well whatever, I don't want to get into a mini scrap about it, the original post I made about it was a joke, not intended to be taken literally and made into a pedantic debate. I've had stuff like this moved out of the TFC forum and into the MLS news section and vice versa, but it looks like the Mods need to tidy up the names since they're not consistent (which has been blighting TFC all season - gah!)... :D

I agree with you, but if we're looking at the precedent that Maurice Edu set 10 million is 'reasonable'. Unless he's talking 10 million Euros.

not sure i agree with that. edu's price was based on promise - he was a rookie with lots of potential. landy cunt has already been unimpressive in germany once and although he's in his supposed prime now, after one more contract will be at the 30 mark and not much of an asset. even allowing for him being a striker i think double edu's value for a player already a bit of a flop once is a bit rich.

aren't the euro and dollar (US) pretty much on par? they used to be anyway, before all this credit crunch crap (who borrows hundreds of billions of dollars anyway? i can't even get a Bay card with more than a hundred dollar limit on it :D:D:D)

Your point is vaild. I don't think Edu was worth 5 million based solely on what I saw of his performances here but I also think that he was playing in a position that wasn't suited exactly to his strength. So Rangers decided to take a 5 million gamble on him hoping that they could make something out of him and they are more than entitled to do that. I guess I was just making a financial assumption based on Edu being unproven and Donovan being slightly less unproven :)

Thing is, although landy cunts has looked good in MLS at times, that's not too hard (certainly not BM standard) and he didn't do it all season long, he was pants at times and taken out of games far too easily. i think the fact BM have gone for a training stint, possibly followed by a loan, after landy cunts has spoken publicly of wanting a move to europe speaks volumes about how much confidence Bayern don't have in him, otherwise they'd have gone in for a straight transfer.

20 goals in 25 MLS games suggests otherwise

Well the reason I think he ended up at Bayern is the relationship he has with Jurgen Klinsmann. Last year under Ottmar Hitzfeld (those were the days) this wouldn't have happened.

To a certain extent Hitcho is right, he failed the first time he was there but has excelled since leaving. Im willing to bet they want to see whether he can perform at a higher level BECAUSE MLS is going to ask for a shit load of money. Usually Bayern wouldnt hesitate to spend it but since its a player that did poorly before in the same league adn nationally, they dont want to risk it. Edu is a special case because he is a project in the works, Rangers bought him for what he could be

Considering he also had multiple, multiple goal games, it would also suggest there were stretches where he didn't and/or couldn't score.

Exactly. How many games did he disappear from and not score? The mark of a good player is not what he does in his highlight reel, but what he does the rest of the time.

Anyway like I said being a big fish in MLS is nothing compared to playing for Bayern. So even his goal stats this season don't count for much in that respect.

The loan is smart on Bayern's part. Takes away all the risk of paying Garber's pie in the sky valuation without Landon proving himself first.

good point

plus, who really thinks Landy is going to play any significant games. He MIGHT see some action in league cup matches but beyond that, i don't see how he gets time ahead of World class players like Toni, Ribery, Klosse, Podolski, etc....

Munich is a stacked team up front. Their problems this year have been keeping the ball out of the goal, not scoring.

This is a good opportunity for a guy like Donavan to stay fit, train with truly 1st class players, maybe get a few games and hopefully play well enough in those few games to prove he's worth a decent transfer fee because MLS will not sell him cheap, regardless of his real market value. He's worth more to MLS than to almost any club in Europe (he's got virtually no sell on value because of his age so most teams in Europe would be just as inclined to wait until he's available on a free as to pay a significant transfer fee...Donavan is a decent player but there are tons of guys like Landon Donavan toiling in Argentina, Brazil, Africa, etc...)

Excellent post! Our problem this year has been keeping the ball out of the net, and even with the potential departure of Podolski in January it still leaves Bayern quite strong up front. Donovan knows Klinsmann and that explains the Bayern connection (as I posted above). Also the Bayern brass are looking at getting the young stud Toni Kroos into the starting XI more often who plays a similar attacking midfield position as LD.

Despite my knee jerk reaction I am not really bothered by this move as it is very likely just a conditioning stint for Donovan.

If he goes, good for him. The league does not need him like before. For this league to grow a bigger name, some players need to go abroad and prove themselves, and not just import old players (in the form of DPs). However, I highly doubt this landycakes character can hold down a starting line up position at Bayern or even a first sub...

If they use him as a midfielder, would he play ahead of Franck Ribéry, Hamit Altıntop, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Tim Borowski, Zé Roberto, or Mark van Bommel? I don't think so. If they use him as a striker, would he play ahead of Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski? Highly unlikely. I can see him being a 4th striker for Bayern (in line behind Podolski), but Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose will never be benched for landycakes, unless they're dead!!
