Maybe now the MLS cup will actually be a cup!

http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=937882

It was announced today the the league has redesigned and renamed the MLS Cup trophy to the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy, effective immediately.

According to an official MLS release, the trophy ‘reflects the traditions of the game, while providing a dynamic and forward-looking design.’ The trophy will be given out for the first time on November 23rd at this year’s championship game in Los Angeles.

Like renaming it matters, everyone will still call it the MLS cup. It's currently called the Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy, and we all see how much that name gets used.

That's the US open Cup that you're thinking of. The MLS Cup doesn't have a name.
The US Open Cup is named after Lamar Hunt. The old MLS Cup trophy was indeed named after Rothenburg.

Regardless, the playoff tournament and championship game will always be referred to as MLS Cup.

Nice looking trophy though. Looks a lot better than the rip-off Vince Lombardi trophy/sex toy thing they had before.

I don't know what sourcewatch is but that info is out of date. He did indeed "save" the league during the "dark" years - which is how he ended up with a bunch of teams, but he has sold off most. I believe he retains the Galaxy and a little less than half of the Dynamo. The article refers to the old Earthquakes who became the Dynamo. The Colorado team is owned by Kroenke - who owns a couple of other Denver teams. The Fire are owned by Andrew Hauptman.

Anschutz owns the LA Galaxy and 49% of the Houston Dynamo. Those other teams listed were sold to other investors long ago.

I'd be happy keeping it as a "shield" but having it look like either the Bundesliga trophy or the ladies wimbledon trophy. Both are quite cool

I read on Bigsoccer that there may be a new supporters shield in the near future. Really, apart from Lamar Hunt, no-one has done more for soccer in North America than him. He is one of the two investors who kept MLS from going under during the dark early days. There wouldn't be TFC or MLS at all if it weren't for him. He fully deserves the honour, and I'm glad he'll see it while he's still alive.

It's my preference as well, Keystone.

I do like the new MLS Cup, though a lot of the metaphors in its design (stars, ribbons/stripes, etc.) are obvious and tacky. A casual fan looking at the new trophy wouldn't assume MLS is an international league or even attempting to branch out from just the US. I'm not saying we need to slap on some maple leafs or anything like that, just tone it down on the standard "yankified" design elements.

Exactly! It's a Canadian creation that was paid for and presented by Canadian soccer fans. To me, that makes it far more valuable then any Lamar Hunt Trophy or MLS Cup.

And the fact that the Impact's name is written all over it just gives us more initiative to win it next year. ;)

I'd still like to win this first:

Rothenberg Trophy doesn't have such a great ring to it does it???

Maybe the Alan Cup? Whatever...

The Cup...

I sorta proposed we call it the Alan before, but since it's now switched to Anschultz, I guess we call 'er Phil.

But regardless -- we win it, or nothing matters.

Looks marginally better than the last two that's for sure...

i like the new cup... but it really does look like old big ears, and in that sense its still kinda lame... kinda. That said i want it.

On a side i hope that since they've copied the trophy, maybe they'll get rid of those awful trophy presentations and copy the champions league.

I could care less if it looks like such-and-such trophy...

The fact that it looks good is all that matters.

Face it, that UEFA Cup isn't the only fancy spittoon in the awards biz.

I wish they would make the supporter's shield an actual sheild

now this is needs to get replaced next and renamed

Well it's not owned by MLS.
The supports shield was bought, designed and owned by the various supports throughout the league in 1998
It belongs, collectively, to the various league supporter's groups, and is awarded by those groups to the team that won it.

And I think it's time it needs a little sprucing up. It looks...ick.

My point is that it will have to be the supporters that do, not MLS since they don't own it.

It's our off-season. What would you rather we talk about?

That's the US open Cup that you're thinking of. The MLS Cup doesn't have a name.
I thought the US open cup was named after Lamaar Hunt
