Toronto FC will train in San Jose on Friday ahead of the final game of the 2008 season against the Earthquakes on Saturday night (10:00p.m. live on CBC Bold). Reds coach John Carver is determined to ensure that his players take the game seriously despite being out of playoff contention. "I've already talked with the players and they know that the season isn't over yet," said Carver. Nine players from the TFC Academy Under-16 team have been invited to Montreal for a training camp with Canada's U17 National team. The training camp runs from 23rd-25th of October and if players impress, they could earn a place in the squad for qualifying games being held in Mexico next year for a place in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Nigeria in 2009. ...

Falling markets don't slow MLS bids

VANCOUVER -- With the stock market staggering and the Canadian dollar falling this wouldn't appear to be the best time to invest money into bringing a Major League Soccer franchise to Vancouver.
Even with the uncertain financial markets Jeff Mallett, the former Yahoo! Inc, president and an owner of the San Francisco Giants, believes soccer has a long-term future on the West Coast.

ZURICH — The contest to win hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups starts Friday when FIFA's executive committee meets to set a timetable for candidates bidding to stage the biggest sporting event on the planet.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said he wants the governing body to choose hosts for both editions in three years' time.
The race will be fiercely contested with a lineup of candidates including Australia, China, England, Russia and the United States. Blatter said last year that Canada was among the countries interested in bidding for the 2018 event.
A message left with the Canadian Soccer Association on Thursday was not immediately returned. ....
