saw this on another board .....

SHOLA AMEOBI was today the subject of an ambitious move from MLS side Toronto FC, who would love to sign the former England Under-21 striker.
The BMO Field outfit would join Norwich City and Middlesbrough as teams tracking Ameobi, after the player indicated he did not want to go to Stoke.
Former Newcastle coach John Carver is in charge at Toronto, and is keen to bring Ameobi to join him and another ex-United star, Laurent Robert. .....

Carver, who has also been a huge hit in MLS so far, added: “The fans here are so similar to the Newcastle fans. They love the game and they are passionate.

That's a considerable compliment from the Big Man.

I moved to Toronto from Stoke on the heals of this rumor. All kidding aside though, Ameobi is an EPL quality striker (ok, bottom half) and I'd be surprised to see him come over here. Delighted, but surprised.

Whether there's a shot of this happening or not, it's good to hear they've got options. Between this and the Huckerby interest, it seems like they are moving quickly to find a strengthen the offense.

Keep your eye on his stuff, I expect a write up on his experience soon.

But it seems like Carver's using the pronoun "I" an awful lot....here's more of the same

The article on goal.com says his team's asking for the equivalent of 7.8 million for him. That can't be within the toronto budget. Mabe that's just an ambitious asking price though.

I'd say £4M is not far off given the ridiculous transfer fees EPL clubs are paying for strikers these days. Boro will pay it if TFC doesn't.

On a serious note;

Notes: Carver confirmed that Toronto FC is interested in signing striker Shola Ameobi, who is on loan to Stoke City from Newcastle. Carver was with Newcastle when Ameobi was in the club's system. "I know him very well," Carver said. "He's got a big future. If we can get him, I'd be delighted."

atleast we know for sure that TFC is indeed interested, now the question is...If he is interested in joining MLS?...find out on the next episode of A SHOT AT GOAL WITH SHOLA TEQUILA

Anyone remember the amazing Robert compilations of his stunning goals, and how excited everyone got at the amazing plays. Well this is the complete opposite for Ameobi

Which is fine by me when you consider the overall talent level of the league is around that of mid-Championship. :D

I don't see him coming over to MLS anytime soon, but I'm sure acommodations would be made uf he expressed serious interest in Toronto.

I though I would chime in here as I have seen Ameobi play live 3-4 times and have watched him grow up with Newcastle for many years. He has a soft touch around goal and generally is reliant on this vs. pace. He is a decent finisher but as has been mentioned doea fall to injury one in a while. I think it was Koryo who mentioned that if a player is coming to MLS it generally means he has one large flaw, and I guess you can say injuries have hurt Ameobi.

With this in mind I would suggest that he would tear up the MLS. When on he can be an effective EPL striker, which suggests that he would be an all world striker in the MLS. He would hold the ball well for our newly designed midfield and finish at a greater rate than our current contingent. I think his ability in the air will also help as at 6' 2" he can get up there.

I am really missing the fact I can't be there this season to see TFNUFC play... It's like we are the other West Ham. John Carver has impressed, and if he can land Ameobi... He will make this team a serious Championship Contender.

Its incredible that we are being compared with the likes of Newcastle as far as supporters are concerned. We should all be proud of ourselves. As far as the striker, we could use a second striker, but what kind of formation will that force? Is Dichio going to be the odd-man out? will we use a 4-4-2 formation? SO MANY questions, but like a good soap opera, a telenovela if you may, its always intriguing.

lol Shocking highlight reel.. ah well. I saw Ameobi play a few times on TV he would be a decent striker in this league in my opinion. I like how we are really looking forward in terms of building a contender. Ameobi is still quite young.

Speculation out of the UK is that it is highly unlikely that Ameobi will come to TFC (several articles today). Kluivert has been let go by Lille. I suspect he’ll reappear on the TFC rumour mill.

Another player likely to be on his way is veteran Dutch striker Patrick Kluivert, who has failed to make an impression this season; Toronto of the MLS are believed to be interested.

Fowler has been linked to a move to Sydney FC in Australia's A-League and Hasselbaink has been linked to Seattle.

True, though both have been rumoured / linked with TFC at various times. I think I’d take Kluivert over Hasselbiank at this point in the careers.

In today’s Footy Show podcast, Kristian Jack said that a source with the TFC said that Ameobi is not coming. Maybe we should go after someone a little less high profile? Kevin Bobson is available on a free transfer:

NEC Nijmegen striker Kevin Bobson will leave the club this summer after the 27-year-old rejected fresh terms from his club.
Bobson’s agent has confirmed that the player would like to move abroad.

Some more interesting info:

Meanwhile, talk that Toronto FC will be unable to afford Shola Ameobi’s transfer fee was today dismissed by a source close to the MLS side.

TFC are owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment group, who also own NHL and NBA giants Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors, with the company worth $1.75 billion.

Well, Shola and Caldwell are former team mates... albeit most of the time they were both at Newcastle, Shola was in the academy, and there was only a season of overlap when Shola was promoted to the senior team before Caldwell started getting loaned out before his eventual departure.

Sill, wonder if there is any personal connection?

It's funny because when I think of Newcastle I think of a team that has a myopic and outdated vision of football, is completely insular, and totally spineless when it comes to making tough decisions that might anger their fan base. They should be much better because they have the resources to be so but they spend most of their time waddling in shit and being mis-managed.

It's about as TFC as you get.
