Now that the season is practically over, I was just wondering if any of the astute statisticians that frequent this forum have attempted to breakdown how many points this team has lost due to the following reasons:

Bad Officiating (bad calls)
Lack of Depth due to FIFA Int'l dates
Last minute collapses
simply outplayed by opponents

It would be interesting to see what factors contributed most often to the loss of points this season...

1) can't quantify easily AT ALL - very VERY subjective
2) again, to quantify you'd have to establish a range of what is standard depth - anything outside starting XI?
3) could do this. there are a few up there - as a side point, collapses within minutes after scoring a goal would be interesting to see, also
4) could do this. im sure the majority will fall into this category.

I sent this e-mail to my buddy on Tuesday... (rough numbers/stats off the top of my head - hope they're 100% correct)...

Take away goals against in the last 2-minutes & stoppage time this season…
Vs Chicago - stoppage time = loss 0-pts (should have been 1)
Vs Chivas USA - stoppage time = loss 0-pts (should have been 1)
Vs Salt Lake - 88th minute = loss 0-pts (should have been 1)
Vs Dallas - stoppage time = tie 1-pt (should have been 3)

We've lost 6-points in the last 2-minutes / stoppage time…

Standings would have been…

Current Wildcard Standings
Kansas City - 36
New York - 36
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dallas - 35
DC United - 34
Colorado - 34
Toronto - 32

Should be Wildcard Standings
Toronto - 38
Kansas City - 36
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
New York - 36
DC United - 34
Dallas - 34
Colorado - 34

Oh my God. This is mortifying. That's really quite depressed me. You don;t realise just how costly the last minute collapses are until you see somethign like that. Ouch.

That's a lot of work to compile

Still I don't think it's fair to the rest of the teams we're competing against.
They too could do a similar analysis based on injuries, mistakes, points dropped etc.

Had the team cut those late-game collapses in half (3 points) and the refs made half the mistakes (3 points as well) we'd be in as well. And that makes more sense than cutting out ref mistakes completely or late game collapses completely.

As it stands...we suffered from 2 major factors in the team not making it to the playoffs. First was the team's lack of concentration in the last 5 minutes of their games. That is a player and coaching issue that TFC needs to address.

The other is the poor refereeing. Nobody is looking for perfect refs...but refs that decide games makes for bitter fans. MLS MUST address this issue for next season.

Jock Stein said years ago that good teams win period it doesn;t matter about the REf and he was right..blaming the ref excuses have to stop.
Lack of Depth is something all MLS clubs deal with the salary cap in place,
and FIFA are not going to change their dates and can't really see MLS doing much either, for sure i don't want more weeknight games. The Last minute collapeses are expect in a youn franchise, their will be less next season. Simply by being in the league longers all clubs are better then TFC at the moment, that too shall change next season( fingers Crossed)
