Reds begin to prepare for Fire
Toronto players back at BMO Field

Toronto FC's squad returned to training at BMO Field on Tuesday morning to begin preparing for Saturday's final home game of the regular season against Chicago Fire (kick off 3:30 p.m. live on CBC). "The lads who played on Saturday did some work in the gym with Paul Winsper," said Reds coach John Carver.

Canadian cities among bids for MLS franchises

Major League Soccer, the burgeoning circuit with 14 teams and plans to add four franchises in the next three years, closes its request for expansion applications today and will receive bids from Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa.

Eliminated Canada hosts Mexico

EDMONTON -- Canada's men's soccer team, riven by dissension and erratic play, promised Tuesday that even though it missed the World Cup cut, it won't play out the string against Mexico.

"We've got to show a bit of character, show a little bit of what we're all about," defender Kevin McKenna of Calgary said at a news conference prior to the Wednesday night match at Commonwealth Stadium.

EDMONTON -- Sven-Goran Eriksson remembers being in a jackpot like this once before. It was back when he was coaching England in World Cup qualifying.
Now the coach of Mexico, he'd been getting a good grilling by four dozen members of the Mexican media yesterday at a team press conference at Sutton Place, when your correspondent, one of the four members of the Canadian media, asked the question.
"I easily remember one," he laughed of a World Cup qualifying loss with England which compared to the one Mexico suffered on the weekend in Jamaica.
"It was to Northern Ireland. If you lose to Northern Ireland like that, people want to kill you."

Velez hopes to keep his place
Reds defender happy to get chance

Toronto FC defender Marco Velez hopes his performance against FC Dallas will earn him another start in the Reds final home game of the regular season against Chicago Fire at BMO Field on Saturday (kick off 3:30 p.m. live on CBC). Velez returned to the starting team for the first time since getting sent off in the defeat to Chivas USA on September 6th, and scored his second goal of the season.

did anyone see the article Steve Goff listed in his blog about the Barcelona MLS bid? they've teamed up with a Miami resident who runs a billion dollar company -- the largest hispanic owned business in the US. That should give them a huge boost... we know that Garber is trying to tap more and more into that market.

And yet, Miami is a sucky sports town that can't support its teams properly and who once lost their MLS side to contraction. It would be a major mistake for Garber to put a team back there. Especially with FC Barcelona doing this to try and sell their name to Americans.

Montreal, Vancouver, St. Louis, and Portland should be given serious consideration.

From a front office perspective, why wouldnt you sell a franchise to miami, they pay 40 mil to gTet into the league, and have a strong backing in FC Barcelona, and if the team doesnt take off, remove the team again and charge another 40 mil to let some other city give it a go. These 40 mil expansion tags are limited now, front office cant keep selling them forever
