Interesting article. If they did this in Toronto I have a feeling a GM would never last more then 4 years with all the negativity we have around here...

Drew Carey will give power to people

Power to the people
Television personality Drew Carey is a minority owner of Seattle's Major League Soccer expansion team that will begin play in 2009, and he made it clear that it will be a team of the fans.
Carey announced the formation of a fan group that will have the power to fire or retain the team's general manager every four years. A minimum of 10,000 votes will be required for a valid vote, but it will be binding, Carey said.
"I never wanted to be a part of MLS unless I could bring this membership aspect," Carey said. "This is going to work, and it's going to be exciting. Other franchises are going to see what it means, giving the fans a voice.''

Great idea... now if we could just get the Leafs to follow suit. :)

Do that in LeafsNation and a GM won't last more than 24 hours.

My only cocnern is whether the whole thing is a PR stunt to give off the impression that they are opening themselves up to scrunity from the fans, when really they're just gonna call the shots from behind closed doors.

so the fans get to choose the GM, buy tickets for four years, vote again, and buy tickets for another four years hoping they got it right that time, vote and repeat.......

Yep, it is a genious plan. Not only that but they will have a supporters council whereby any one who gets 25 people to sign up for season ticket packages gets a seat. So the supporters groups if they choose to, will have the largest voice and also be providing a ton of season ticket holders.

So both the supporters and management win. It's symbotic kinda like Barcelona or some clubs in South America.
