TFC will fight to the finish
By DEAN MCNULTY (dean.mcnulty@sunmedia.ca), SUN MEDIA

Toronto FC captain Jim Brennan can't remember when the last time was that he faced so many "must-win" games at the close of a soccer season.
But the 32-year-old defender will lead TFC into another do or die Major League Soccer match tomorrow against FC Dallas with the same determination that got them a road win against New York Red Bulls last week.
This time, however, Brennan will not have steady midfielder Carl Robinson or speedy centre forward Amado Guevarro, both lost to World Cup qualifying games with Wales and Honduras respectively, to bolster TFC's hopes of reaching a playoff round.

TFC, FCD look to climb into playoff spot
Both teams sit just outside playoff picture with three games remaining

A pair of teams still in the chase for a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs - yet both on the outside looking in - meet at Pizza Hut Park when FC Dallas takes on Toronto FC. FCD currently sits just one point outside the top eight, playing their final home game of the season. On the strength of impressive back-to-back results, Toronto FC has moved to within three points of a wild card spot - and regardless of the weekend results, cannot be eliminated even with a defeat in Frisco.

Barrett sets high targets
Striker admits the Reds must win at Dallas

Toronto FC striker Chad Barrett admits it's another must win game for the Reds at FC Dallas on Saturday night. Kick off is 8:30 p.m. live on CBC Bold. Barrett was a two goal hero in the 3-1 win at New York last week to move Toronto to within three points of the playoff places with three games left to play. The striker is setting lofty targets for the remaining matches this season.

Smith, New Zealand can rest easy
Forward will remain with TFC, as All Whites have clinched first place in group

TORONTO -- Several of Toronto FC's international players will be spending the next week embroiled in FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, but for Jarrod Smith and his New Zealand side, the pressure is off for the next 13 months. The All Whites have already clinched first place in their qualifying group and have advanced to a home-and-away playoff in November 2009 that will decide their World Cup fate.

Bridge named women's U-20 coach (http://www.torontosun.com/sports/soccer/2008/10/10/7037661-sun.html)

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA -- Ian Bridge was named head coach of the Canadian women's under-20 soccer team yesterday.

Bridge, who served as an assistant with both the women's national and U-20 teams this year, will lead Canada at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup next month in Chile.

Bridge was head coach of the Canadian entries at the U-20 World Cups in 2002, '04 and '06.

He takes over from Bob Birarda, who has parted ways with the Canadian Soccer Association.

In a release, the CSA said the departure was a mutual decision that both sides agreed was in the best interest of both parties.

Canada won the CONCACAF women's U-20 championship in June. Canada also won the Four Nations tournament in Chile last month.

Birarda, who also served as coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps women's team of the United Soccer Leagues, has parted ways with that club as well. In a release, the team said that current staff members would handle his duties on an interim basis, adding Birarda's departure was a mutual decision.

I can't believe how close the play-off race is at this point. Top 3 in both conferences will go through, while the next 2 teams with the most points (regardless of conference) will get the wildcard spots. If we beat Dallas I think we'll have a REALLY good shot at it -- especially with the other teams helping us out all the time.

MUST WIN!
