Brennan quits national men's soccer team
'I don't see eye to eye on a lot of things'

Don't expect to see Jim Brennan playing for the Canadian national team anytime soon.
Not as long as current manager Dale Mitchell remains in charge.
Brennan, 31, has been a fixture for Canada since making his international debut in 1999, but the Toronto FC defender cited growing frustration with both Mitchell and the Canadian Soccer Association as his reasons for temporarily walking away from the national team.

Away-game routine change helps TFC in NY
Matchday practice invigorated team before Red Bulls game

TORONTO -- Toronto FC head coach John Carver has spent all season tinkering with his team's away-game routine in order to find the balance between keeping the Reds both comfortable away from home and prepared for the game at hand. Who knew that some airport red tape would provide the missing piece of the puzzle? After TFC endured a three-hour delay before flying to New York last Friday, Carver and equipment manager Malcolm Phillips had to spend another two hours at the New York airport dealing with customs officials about some visa issues

All five will be unavailable for Toronto's next game Saturday, October 11 in Dallas. Brennan quits Canada
Gerry Dobson

Jim Brennan's days with the National team are over -- at least for the time being.

The TFC captain announced his decision Tuesday morning as a result of what he says is mismanagement of the team in World Cup Qualifying. Brennan was not called up by Canadian head coach Dale Mitchell for the upcoming matches against Honduras and Mexico.

TFC's big date in Big D

Call me a hypocrite. Call me a bad Canadian.

All season long, I have been railing against the MLS' policy of playing league games at the same time as the national teams play their World Cup qualfiers. Here's a sample argument. (http://blog.canoe.ca/thefull90/2008/09/03/) I have been writing that Canada's games should always take priority over the MLS.

This Saturday, though, Canada — pretty well eliminated from World Cup-finals contention — face Honduras, while TFC faces FC Dallas, a team the Reds trail by just three points in the standings in the frantic race for the last two playoff spots in the MLS.
http://blog.canoe.ca/thefull90/2008/10/08/tfc_s_big_date_in_big_d

Steven Sandor's list from the print edition of 24 Hours listing playoff spots:

Team Points
7. New York 35 (tiebreaker with TFC is goal difference)
8. FC Dallas 34
9. Colorado 34 (TFC holds tiebreaker)
10. DC United 33 (TFC loses tiebreaker)
11. Kansas City 33 (tiebreaker is goal difference)
12. TFC 31
13. San Jose 30
14. Los Angeles 29 (TFC holds tiebreaker)

Remaining games: FC Dallas, Chicago, San Jose
So it is clear that a win at Dallas is mandatory, and we need DC to lose.
TFC may need to win all 3 to make the final spot, although Steve thinks that 7 points out of 9 may do the trick.

31.9% chance of getting in, if we get 7 points
6.0% chance, if we get 6 points
86.8% chance, if we get 9 points

He can just stay in Guatemala for all I care. Between him and Robert, we've seen a couple of washed up busts paid way too much this year.

Harmse has been a big part of the solid backline the last couple of games. I think from him to Velez is a big step down, and a huge blow. With Marshall gone, that leaves James and Velez to start, which is the shakiest possible backline we have, and neither player, IMHO, is MLS quality.

He's fit enough for his country, eh? Well Ruiz couldn't make the the Toronto team on his recent form anyway. I doubt we'll see him play for the rest of the year for Toronto regardless if he performs well for his country.

The city of Portland, Oregon took a major step toward potentially having an MLS expansion team when a prospective ownership group from the city put in a formal expansion bid on Tuesday.
Merrit Paulson, president of Shortstop LLC, released the following statement:
“Today, on behalf of the greatest soccer fans in America, we submitted our formal application to bring Major League Soccer to Portland. We expect to get a response to our application no later than March of next year. In the meantime, we will continue to work with MLS, city officials and the community to turn this exciting idea into reality for Portland and Oregon.”

Carver has always had our backs and continues to think of the fans.

How people on this board can want him gone, makes me angry but not as much as it makes me very sad.

Carver is the best thing that happened to this club this year, period.

But hasn't Mo already said that a DP is a go? I wonder if something has changed to make JC give this public ultimatum.

Or maybe he was just being fanciful in his reiterations.

The Montreal Impact were eliminated from USL First Division playoffs this past weekend, but that doesn’t mean their season is over.
In fact, the Canadian club still has a few important games left to play, including Wednesday's road contest against Trinidadian side Joe Public FC in the CONCACAF Champions League (CBC Bold, CBCSports.ca 8 p.m. ET).

Steve Sandor's tiebreaker rules may have to take into account what happens if multiple teams are tied. then it's most points head to head among all the teams tied.

I think it's an honest assessment from a guy who is frustrated that at least half the games they lost this year came after putting up, and failing to capitalize on, numerous good scoring chances.

Really, if we have an Angel, or a Cooper, who can actually finish, we're in the CCL, we're in the playoffs. We're effectively about eight points out of being 75% certain of making it, despite going 19 games with only two wins. What does that say about all those dropped points due to late goals and our inability to capitalize in front of net.

I'll also note that Carver, whom I was beginning to doubt, made a vociferous public point before the Red Bulls (are shite) game when he said we were getting ripped apart in the middle when Guevara and Robinson play together: he wanted Guevara to hang back more.

Look at the result. Yeah, he didn't attempt to create a million scoring chances, but he was offensively involved all game AND helped Robinson clog up the middle; voila, minimal scoring chances for team that includes Angel, McGee and Dane Richards, which is a lot of speed and scoring talent to stifle.

My cynical side, however, suggests that he wouldn't make such a bold statement unless a) there was no hope left in his relationship with management or b) he's been promised he's getting one but isn't seeing much progress and is lighting a fire under Mo.

Interesting stuff.

He's a great guy, and that's wonderful. We don't need cheerleaders though and Lombardo was a good kid too.
