Garber speaks on expansion, schedule

By jtobin • Sep 25th, 2008 • Category: Features
The team owners of all MLS teams have been in Chicago the last few days figuring out a way to grow as a business. MLS commisioner Don Garber discussed a few issues in the press box of Toyota Park supplied the media with the information.

MLS 2.0 will be rolled out in 2010. With this comes the question of “What does that mean?” There will be no promotion or relegation unveiled at that time and the league would prefer another Midwest team such as St. Louis to provide more balance geographically. Interest in a Miami franchise has resurfaced and Garber reiterated the demand in the Pacific Northwest is strong as well.

even though I'd love Miami to get a team.... it's a bad decision.
They failed before, and there's very little interest. If they want
to cater to the Spanish population, they need to build in miami proper,
and if they want the white soocer moms, they might as well put it in
Ft.Lauderdale or Tampa. And clearly... the best option is MTL.

oh... and the whole 2.0 thing implies user generated content.
Youtube is web2.0 because almost everything comes from uploads.

are they saying that we'll be the ones doing all the work while they run the show?

hmmm... that's different how?

It's a pretty lousy article. It says 2.0 is comming, no relegation and then blabs on about possible expansion.

Are these supposed to be farm teams or something?

the way Montreal is playing in CL, I think it is in the MLS' best interest to seize the Impact from USL, to save some face internationally

i think Miami could do well if they build a Soccer stadium right in the heart of the city!

Miami is once bitten twice shy but is a mouth watering pick for MLS due to geography making the national coverage all but complete in the SouthEast of the country and the futbol population there can't be ignored. Good luck to them. Unless they take a Canadian teams slot.
