TFC players come from near and far to help earn tie
LARRY MILLSON

TORONTO — When Toronto FC was reunited at BMO Field on Saturday with the return of eight players who had been away on international duty for World Cup qualifying matches, there was a new recruit on the pitch.
Versatile defender Hunter Freeman was obtained on Friday in a trade with the New York Red Bulls for a couple of supplemental picks in next year's Major League Soccer draft, and compared with many of his new teammates, he had a short trip to reach Toronto.
Freeman, 23, who played the full game on Saturday as a midfielder in a 1-1 draw with the first-place Columbus Crew, came in from New York for his one training session with the team on Friday.

Melnyk takes kick at soccer

A world-class soccer stadium in Ottawa? A pitch for a Major League Soccer franchise? Skeptics are of no concern to Cyril Leeder, COO of Senators Sports and Entertainment. He's heard it all before.

The dream (some might call it a fantasy) of an MLS team playing in Miami as early as 2011 refuses to die. The latest scenario had Spanish club Barcelona making a fact-finding visit here recently to weigh the merits of playing at the now-demolished Orange Bowl (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/sports/football/orange-bowl-PLTRA0000003.topic) site.

This is the same prospective stadium site that Miami Mayor Manny Diaz (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/politics/manny-diaz-PEPLT001670.topic) has reserved (next to the Marlins (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/sports/baseball/florida-marlins-ORSPT000174.topic) prospective ballpark) with the promise of devoting $50 million in public funds toward construction. No investor has decided to take the bait, though it appears Barcelona has at least come to sniff the waters.

The Catalan paper Sport reported on Sept. 3 that Barcelona club president Joan Laporta and general director Joan Olive flew to Miami to investigate the possibility of owning an MLS franchise here. The Barcelona Web site pelikano.es wrote that Barcelona met with officials from the USL club Miami FC, which is owned by the Brazilian-based soccer promotions company Traffic Sports.http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/columnists/sfl-flsprusnak14sbsep14,0,4858149.column (http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/ticketing/index.jsp?c_id=fla)

It's a gamble, but you can see why guys may take it. If soccer rises to become one of the top sports in North America it'll pay off. Places like Ottawa and Columbus can be like Green Bay in the NFL - a place that would never get an expansion team now.
