Dollars and Sense

THE REAL STANDINGS
Anyone who follows Toronto FC is painfully aware of where the second-year franchise ranks in the league standings (http://web.mlsnet.com/standings/).
For those who didn't bother to click the link, TFC heads into Saturday's game four spots from the bottom of the league. Like Los Angeles, Kansas City and FC Dallas, they're stuck at 26 points, but climb a little above those other teams because they've got one more win.

Pretty spurious argument; he doesn't account for writedowns and the fact that franchise fees have quadrupled due to demand in a year, or that Seattle is also a sellout, or that Philly is on the way to being a sellout, or that two new soccer specific stadium are being built (and financed) etc etc.

Pretty cheap attention grab for that blog.

I don't think you can make any sort of analysis on the whole Forbes ranking without actually knowing how the profit/loss is calculated. Do all teams report it the same way, or are, as jloome points out, there writedowns and writeoffs to offset other parts of the business? Does this take into account the players salaries and what cut the MLS takes, or is this simply a "this is how much money they made, after everything else"?

It's always hard to take any concrete evidence from a summary of information that isn't in the public domain, let along do an analysis of it.
