Short-handed Toronto FC falls to Chivas USA
LARRY MILLSON
TORONTO — John Carver has experienced life with the soccer elite, working in England's Premier League.
He has worked with the not-so-elite of soccer, trying to keep together a team at financially troubled Luton Town in England's League One as players were being sold from under him.
But Carver has never had to experience some of the things he has encountered in his first year in Major League Soccer as head coach of Toronto FC.

Delicate patchwork disintegrates on TFC
Team cobbled together with substitutes while players off at qualifiers can't fend off Chivas
Chivas USA 3 TFC 1
Morgan Campbell
With injury time dwindling and Toronto FC pressing to tie the game, a quick, concise counterattack from Chivas USA ended any hope that TFC – missing nine players from its regular rotation – could salvage a point from yesterday's 3-1 loss.
When Francisco Mendoza's pass found Ante Razov 20 yards from TFC's goal, Chivas' leading scorer teed the ball up, paused a split second and then drove it past TFC keeper Brian Edwards.

MONTREAL–If this indeed was a do or die game for the Canadian men's national soccer team, as midfielder Julian de Guzman declared beforehand, then the team's World Cup chances for 2010 took a severe blow last night.
Canada squandered a 1-0 halftime lead as Honduras struck for two goals in a nine-minute span early in the second half to win the CONCACAF regional World Cup qualifier 2-1.

Honduras rallies to defeat Canada in men's soccer
The Canadian men's soccer team was dealt a stinging blow to its 2010 World Cup hopes as a pair of second-half goals from Ramon Nunez helped Honduras rally for a 2-1 win in Saturday's qualifying match at Saputo Stadium in Montreal.
Adrian Serioux helped Canada to a very early lead, but a pair of goals in the second half from Ramon Nunez secured the advantage for Honduras, which earned three points and moved into second place in a group led by first-place Mexico (six points) and Jamaica (one point).

Canada hopes dealt blow

MONTREAL -- It took only 11 minutes of loose play last night at Saputo Stadium to push Canada's World Cup hopes into a deep hole.
Ramon Nunez scored twice early in the second half as Honduras came from a goal down to defeat Canada 2-1 in a qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup.
Canada, which has made it to the World Cup only once, in 1986, has taken only one point from two home matches to start its qualifying group play and now must travel to Mexico for its next match Wednesday.
"It was lost in the second half," Canadian captain Paul Stalteri said. "We have four games left to play, and even though three of them are away games, we still have a chance."
Adrian Serioux scored four minutes into the match for Canada, which had played Jamaica to a disappointing 1-1 draw in the opening match on Aug. 20 in Toronto

Short-handed TFC falls to Chivas
THE CANADIAN PRESS
TORONTO -- It was billed as a Major League Soccer game.
But it sure felt like a minor-league affair for Toronto FC and the team's fans.
Missing nine regulars to international duty and forced to sign three defenders, including one amateur, to emergency call-up contracts a day before the game, sinking Toronto FC (7-11-5) lost 3-1 to Chivas USA (8-9-6) before a crowd of 19,863 on Saturday at BMO Field.

Toronto FC lament one that got away
Despite missing pieces, errors irk TFC in Chivas aftermath
TORONTO -- For Toronto FC, the most frustrating part of Saturday's 3-1 loss to Chivas USA wasn't the nine men lost to international absences or the three last-minute emergency signings thrust into the starting lineup. The frustration came from the fact that TFC had a chance to win a game that they were expected to lose. "We could've won the game so I'm not going to dwell on the fact that we didn't have these players," said Rohan Ricketts. "That's a game that could've been won. We gave everything. I don't know what to say."
